Hi,

Me and the wife have decided to get a guinea pig, well actually two and after three evenings of Googling i think i could now able to do a pop quiz on the different types of cages out there.

We dont have an enormous amount of floor space so was looking at a two storey indoor cage to maximise the room available, ive had good read through the various posts on this forum and i think we narrowed it down to the Essegi 120 Cage Baffy 2 storey.

I noticed a couple of negatives comments about it:
  • Small door at top
  • Hole in the middle of the top level floor
  • Sharp edges (not too worried as I'm guessing these can be filed down)

The pro's seem to outweigh the cons, but the hole in the middle of the floor does sound odd. Can anyone advise if this is an issue for the guinea's?

Does anyone know if theres a better cage out there that ive missed?

I did notice another cage on ebay which looks good, but other than positive feedback theres not much else mentioned about it, although the hole appears bigger, and the hole in the floor appears to be more to the side (although its difficult to tell exactly).

Any help and advise would be very welcome :)

Have you considered a C&C cage? These can be multilevel, and you can make them fit the exact space that you have by overlapping grids, therefore maximising your space.

Yes had a look at those, how and whats needed to build them. It looked more difficult as i'd need to have a top to it to keep unwanted visitors out - namely cat & 2 year old son.

i also think the wife doesn't trust my building skills, which she no doubt has good reason not to.

I'd prefer to keep it easy as a first cage, if we change later on i'd probably be more comfortable with building one

Ahh, I understand. They are really not practical with cats! :) In that case unfortunatly i cant help. :( Hopefully someone will be along with advice soon

I found a link to the first cage to look at the pics :)

I would say it is a good size cage, the doors look a reasonable size but I'm not sure about the ramp arrangement. A lot of guineas have trouble using ramps, but they can be helped by putting an easy-grip surface or ramp tunnel on.

The cage you are looking at on eBay is only 100 cm long, although it is two-storey the guineas would benefit from having the larger floor area on one level to run around. HTH :)

Personally, I would get a single floored cage. My lot love to run laps and it'd be much harder in a two floor cage.

If I was to buy any cage for 2 guinea pigs, it would have to be the Ferplast 120.

Ahh yes forgot to add the link to that one grrrr

Agreed i'd probably need to do something with the ramp, a tunnel over it maybe or some sides, i dont mind adding to an existing cage but wouldnt fancy building it from scratch.

Just comparing the sizes (which is probably most important) the decisions out of those two is simple i guess.

now to decide it 2 storied is the way to go and if so is there any better 120cm cages out there?

good to see its possible, i didnt find many images with tops on them. its still probably not my preferred option right now

i was thinking maybe i'd get some cubes to build an indoor run for them which i can quickly tie together then cut off and fold away, if its that easy? got loads of cable ties handy.

Alternatively, you could cat and toddler proof a C&C cage.

If I can make a C&C cage then so can you!

Inspiration..

Hi I have two cats and have the small animal cage R5A 120 from zooplus and it's a great cage. My girls are currently popcorning and running laps in it! You get the space and storage space underneath.

HTH Sarah

A c and c cage with a roof is ideal. It is the only thing that will really give your piggies enough space. None of the cages you buy are big enough and they will still need a few hours floor time.

I have the essegi cage and love it..so do my girls..yes at first the hole in middle of floor bothered me but its not really an issue and my girls zoom up and down the ramps.

The only rough edge i noticed was on the door section but easily sorted.

Also the door on the 2 tier one is small..but on the 3 tier there is a huge door on roof that opens. I have the 3 Tier and we have put c&c around the bottom for run area..works well.

i have the essegi too, its a double tier one, but in the bottom because it is so tall i have put a shelf all the way round so its almost like a three tier.

The rams are fine, you just need to cover them with something. My pigs have no probs running up and down them.

Its also very easy to clean out.

Thanks for all the comments, i'll probably go with the essegi 2 tier one when its back in stock at zooplus as they do 15% off for new customers & Quidco cashback is 5%.

Any other must have bits which i should include in the xmas stocking?

Thanks.
