One of my piggies woke me up last night with that strange chirrping they're known to do. I'd been asleep for about 30 mins, I jumped out of bed and ran over to them (live in a studio so we can see each other in bed!), I couldn't tell which one it was because they stopped when I turned the light on. I gave them both a little stroke on the head and went back to sleep.
The weird thing is, I thought they only did that when they were worried or distressed. It's such an odd coincidence because I lost my job yesterday and I was distraught all evening. I didn't cuddle them like I usually do in the evening because I didn't want to stress them out with my crying.
It sounded a bit like a cricket or a bird. Does anyone know for certain why they do it? It sounds stupid but it was like they wanted to check I was still there or alive or something!

Aww sorry to hear about the job! I am not sure why Guinea Pigs chirp but having read about it I do think that its just a communication thing. I've never heard mine do it. :)

That's it! I'm inclined to agree with that lady on guinea lynx, I think they were just checking in with the mother ship.

Sorry to hear you lost your job Charlotte, but when one door closes, another one always opens....a better one, so dont be down hearted hunny ;) I had some news last week too, My youngest son, Ryan (little blonde one you met) was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome but my friend said to me yesterday when I told him that it was something to celebrate as he is a very special child and that is a much better way of looking at it :) You will get a better, higher paid job...you`ll see!
That was an amazing thing you heard, I listened to it on the guinea sounds before and it took my breath away! Mine have never done it but I do know that piggies can get distressed as Lennie did once when I was crying...he walked round and round me and licked my hands whilst making this sad high pitched wheeking noise I hadnt heard before.
Chin up sweetie :)

I think it's lovely to think our piggies care for us as much as we do for them :smitten:

Yes I do Sammy ;D
I will phone you for a chat this wheek...I was very busy re building my piggie cages today, but I am feeling better about things and reading a really good book on the subject :)

Sorry if I hijacked your thread piggytoefluff ;)

One of my boys did this - just for one evening, he did it on and off all night. It is a beautiful sound but to be honest, when you're trying to get to sleep it becomes quite annoying! That sounds horrible but it was really really loud and very strange.

I have 3 brothers living together and they're about 7 months old now, this happened about a month ago. I wondered if he was calling for a mate or something like that, he was quite frisky and domineering for the evening with his brothers. I was uneasy that it was going to be the start of trouble between them but cross fingers, everything has been OK since then. If you hear it again, watch the behaviour - it'll be interesting to see if there's any dominance or anything like that.

I play them to Honkey and he well wheeks along, must be the piggies version of Knees Up with Mrs Mills :D

Sorry about your job, hope you get another soon. Well done for getting to hear chirrping sound apparently its quite rare. I have heard that Piggies make this sound when they are happy but i am not sure as have never heard it myself.
