Went to bed last night. Both my partner and I were woken up by a loud chirping noise coming from the house. Bit of a panic at first when we thought we had a little birdie stuck in the house but figured out it was coming from one of the pigs. Unfortunately by the time we got downstairs they stopped, so we couldn't figure out which one it was, although we suspect it was our youngest, Meg as she's the little vocal one of the group!

Anyone know why this happens? xx

The elusive guinea pig 'song' ? I have heard about piggies doing this but never heard my lot doing it. I read somewhere (**** here) that it used to be thought of as stress related but more often than not happens in the quiet settled times. Just another of those cute little piggie noises - such vocal little animals!:)

Aww. That's so cute! Apparently, hardly any piggies chirp, so you're lucky to have one. It's a shame you didn't see which one, as the other piggies all stop and look at the chirping pig until she stops.

I've heard mixed reasons for chirping, some people seem to think it's stress-related, others seem to think it's not. I would check on your piggy (to see if she's being bullied) and if she looks happy, then I would assume that all is okay. I can't help but think that if it is stress-related, the noise would be more common and all piggies would chirp at times, rather than it being peculiar to certain pigs.

I've heard our pigs chirp twice. Once I was sitting down watching tv and heard the strangest noise coming from the front room. It was exactly like you describe - almost like a bird.. I went in to see Putt the quietest of our pair chirping away, she stopped as I approached and just looked at me.

The 2nd time was 2 weeks ago, my wife by accident startled the Piggles and Putt went running into the wooden Villa where Pitch was sitting, now normally this would lead to lots of squeaks but instead Pitch started to chirp with her head out of the window.

I don't know if it is stress related but the 2nd inceident would lead me to think so.

I have found a link to a site containing descriptions of Pig sounds http://www.jackiesguineapiggies.com/guineapigsounds.html

It may be worth having a read...

Thanks for the replies.

As i'm not sure who was the culprit, it's hard to see if indeed it is stress related. All 3 of my girls seem happy enough though, and all 3 have been popping about this morning.

Who knows, need to see if it happens again! :)

My Squeaky, living up to her name, is a chirper.....I have been woken up a few times as it does always seem to happen in the small hours. The first time it happened it was really alarming as it was just so loud and really did sound like some crazy bird. However, she seemed fine, and when I looked at her she looked back at me as if to say 'what are you staring at?!'. Can't say if it was stress related as she's such a laid back piggy who only thinks about eating as much as possible!

My montgomery often serenades me with a chirping song. I dont think anyone really knows why piggies do this but it is wonderful once you get over the initial shock and know that there isnt a bird in the house!

I've been lucky enough to hear Willow sing just once.

I don't think it was stress related in our case though. She had been indoors to stretch her legs and she began to sing shortly after I put her back in her hutch. Pippa was already back in the hutch, so it's not because she was on her own or anything.

It was quite dark so I couldn't see her properly, but she seemed to be stood quite high and Pippa just sat watching her. She sang for a minute or two before carrying on eating, apparantly unaware she had just put on a bit of a performance!

Ive heard 1 of my girls do this a few times,it just comes out of now where, mainly late at night. When she does all the other girls still.I read that it was a warning call used by their ancestors years ago but then got bred out.

My Max chirped once, and it was just amazing. It was when we first had the babies and he was in the other cage because of his piggy pink eye. He was having some floor time, playing his little games, running from one side of the cage to the other to get the babies to chase him, and then I heard it. I knew what it was because I have probably ready everything on Guinea Pigs on the web.

I got down on my hands and knees and watched him, he went on for 5 and a half minutes and then it just stopped. He seemed in a trance, as if he had no control over it, and then went right back to playing with the babies. I think he was happy, I think he was so happy that popcorning wasn't enough, and he had to let it out somehow.

I may never hear it again, but that 5.5 minutes was really neat!
