DougalandDiego
Teenage Guinea Pig
Hi everyone,
I seem to be posting a lot on the health section of the forum lately, so apologies!
The last few of weeks I’ve noticed that Diego has chipped his bottom right tooth a couple of times. Each time it’s grown back in about two days and has only been a small amount off the top. He is unfortunately known as a bottle banger and bangs his bottom teeth really hard on the ball bearing of the bottle and we were convinced this is how he’s chipping his bottom teeth. This afternoon when I got home from work I noticed he’d chipped it again and I actually, by some miracle, found the tiny bit of tooth under his drink bottle which confirms my theory the last few days I’ve added a ferplast sippy bottle to both boys cages as I hoped it would give him more water than his usual glass bottle when he was drinking from it but he hasn’t yet used the sippy bottle and goes for his normal one. I’ve also tried putting a bowl of water in his cage for him to have instead but he doesn’t use it.
When he chipped his tooth a few weeks ago he was due to have his cartrophen injection and the vet (who’s piggy savvy and recommended on the forum) checked it for me and said it was fine and it would grow back which it did.
I guess I’m concerned as to whether him constantly chipping his bottom teeth is going to cause a problem? They both grow in nicely after but I’ve got myself in a bit of panic because I know how tricky it can be once a pig develops a tooth problem. I should add he’s still eating absolutely fine and doesn’t have any trouble in that department!
Would also be great if anyone has any tips to encourage him to drink from his ferplast sippy... I don’t really want to remove his old bottle until he uses the other!
Thanks in advance!
