Hi
Ive recently found out that one of my girly's is infact a boy....ooops !! I've separated them. She's at the top of a double hutch & he's underneath...The problem is that he's chewing chunks out of his half of the hutch trying to get to her. Also when we put them in the run with a barricade across the middle he's trying to chew the bars & has chipped his teeth. Luckily there's no real damage to his mouth but I really need some ideas on how to stop his chewing. would it be possible yo smear something onto the bars to discourage him. I do feel really sorry for him as he's been with her since birth as I bought them as sisters. I'm thinking of getting him castrated when he's a bit older so he can be reunited (they are both 13 weeks old).

Oh dear :o :o :o
Let's cross our paws that the girlie is not pregnant :'(
Trouble is he can smell her so he wants to be with her, are you able to put him further away from her? this might help... :-\
Watch out for his toofies love that can damage them if they continue to chip them like that ::)
I'm hoping somebody else has a suggestion... sorry i'm of no help on this one 98)
Good luck O0

more little mites :'( :'( :'( i would suggest taking both out of the hutch scrub it clean and put one in it and get another hutch and put this in another room and more the other in that. you can either get them teddies to cuddle or get them a friend each. hoping the little girl isn't pregnant as they can get pregnant at 4 weeks of age. did you get them from a friend, petshop or rescue? am so sorry you have to go through this, praying your little girl isn't pregnant as she will have trouble if she is poor little girl.
whilst you have both in the same room where he can smell her he will continue to try and get to her, so one needs to be moved into another room. good luck. O0 sending hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: welcome to the forums from us in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* sending prayers hoping your little girl isn't pregnant 0:) 0:) 0:)

perhaps get another male piggie for him to hand out with...he might stop wanting to get near your female then.... :smitten:

goodluck :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Let's hope the boy wasn't successful in getting your little girl pregnant. Please keep and eye on her. It will take around 60 to 80 days and she will gain some weight in the meantime.
Another option is to take her to the vets to get an ultrasound done. Up to you - as that can be quite expensive, depending on vet!

Take both piggies out of their respective hutches and give the hutches a huge clean with some warm water with a little bleach added. That will get rid of any smell. Then add them back to the hutches in reverse.....girl at the bottom, boy at the top.

Give the boy some other wood pieces to chew on, so he will leave the hutch alone.

In the run outside, don't put them next to each other! Take it in turns who has the run or make two runs on opposite ends of the garden.
If you are taking it in turns, then make sure that you put the boy in first and then when he is back in the hutch you take the girl out. Otherwise your boy will go "bananas" sniffing the grass where SHE has been.

My boars tend to go in the run first, then I move the run along a bit and the girls go in. Or if the weather is really good I set up two runs on the grass away from each other and the girls go in one and the boys in the other.

Get your boy neutered when you get the chance. Leave him after the operation for around 4-6 weeks on his own before you add him back to the girl.

Other option - wait if the girl is pregnant and if so see what she delivers, after 3 weeks you can add the baby boar to dad's hutch.

Good luck!

thanx every one for the advice. Ive got everything crossed that Coco isn't preggers. The hutches have been disinfected & Ive put a wooden chewy thing in his hutch (nut knobbler ) Just hope that this will help with the chewing problem. I've been weighing them on a weekly basis since I got them & they are both putting on roughly the same amount of weight each week.(around 40g) I suppose if Coco starts putting on more weight than Smudge it may indicate that she's pregnant.... Does anyone know at what age I can get Smudge castrated.

from what i have read on here the age is around 6 months of age and then 4 weeks to recouperate. here in oz it is not common practise to castrate piggies or to put piggies through surgery unless it is life or death situation. O0 if you read the threads in health you will find that alot of piggies have lost their lives due to this surgery, so if your going to put your boy through this make sure your vet knows guinea pigs but wish you'd seriously think about leaving him as he is and getting him a male friend and your little girl a girl friend. what ever you decide sending hugs and healing vibes. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
