My two guinea pigs have two little wooden houses to hide in, and they usually chew on it occasionally which is fine! But recently one of my guinea pigs is continuously chewing on it, like spending all day chewing on it! What can I do to reduce the behavior? can I put something on there to stop them chewing it? I don't want to change it to plastic houses because then I'm sure she'll just eat that too!

Thanks for your help :)

Piggies like to chew wood, nothing you can do to stop them.... Maybe put another lot of specialty hay in as a treat such as Timothy to try and distract them.

At least they will be wearing their teeth down

You can try to give them other wood chews as a distraction, but piggies (all rodents) are pre-programmed to chew. Their teeth grow continuously and they chew to wear them down. At least your pig is focused on chewing something that is actually intended for guinea pigs- a couple of mine have been very persistent at trying to chew baseboards and dry wall! I actually still have several doorframes and baseboards with very noticeably Frenzy teethmarks in them from years back, and Hadley apparently saw that someone had started them off for her and decided it was her mission to finish the job! Sometimes when they take it into their heads that they want to chew a particular item, it can be very hard to dissuade them!

Chewing is natural and some piggies chew more than others. But it's good to let them have wooden items to chew on as it's good for their teeth. Shame that they end up remodelling the entrances to their houses!
