One of my pigs chews the cage bars whenever she thinks I'm getting her food (basically whenever I open the fridge door). Now her cagemate is experimenting with chewing bars too. The only time they do it is when they think there's food, so it's not a case of boredom. How can I safely discourage this habit?

All I can suggest is to try to break the association by not rewarding bar chewing with food. So for example when you get veggies from the fridge don't then feed them straight away. Try opening the fridge door frequently for no reason, it may take some time but they should learn that the sound doesn't mean food is on the way.

Shoot I've tried doing that, and alas. :/

Ignore them. The boys started bar chewing and at first the husband would give in and get them something (they were starving apparently)! But I told him it’s attention seeking so he stopped. Eventually they did stop, but now do it at feeding time. If they do, I either walk to the other side of their cage and wait for them or feed the girls first.

Red and Brillo are just the same. I have started putting their veggies ready before I feed them trying to break the habit, there are times they drive us nuts especially Red.
Tho I miss Heidi (rip) watching me at her corner wait ing for her food

Two of mine bar chewed and one of those chewed the correx too.It seems to be solved (touch wood) as I’ve stopped feeding them at the bars. I used to offer them food though the cage and then scatter the rest, but Chewie insisted on chewing the correx even though there was food else where. Now they never get fed at the bars and so far, no chewing! But it’s only been two days . . .

Something I always do before feeding is pat my legs and talk about veggies. I make a bit of a song and dance about it. So there's a whole exciting routine that makes it obvious when veggies are coming, every single time. If I am grabbing a drink for myself from the fridge, there's no song and dance of course. My now senior, solo pig, Wiggy perches on when he wants to socialize or have a treat. My other (late) piggy, Bruno, needed lots of floor time to run and forage to burn off energy both mentally and physically - he was a bar chewer. Not sure if more exercise/forage time on the floor might help your piggies with their bar chewing? Maybe not!

I think it is a competitive behavior between piggies too for sure, like, "Feed ME first!" Maybe you could add a chain of cardboard chews along the bars they chew? That's a trick I used that was helpful. I just wrapped cardboard (paper towel rolls) around the bars that were being chewed. That way, if they are chewing, at least it isn't so hard on their teeth. Maybe if you changed your routine to topping up hay 15mins before feeding veggies, and then while they are eating hay, you could bring veggies over? That way, maybe they'd be more preoccupied enjoying a freshly cleaned and topped up hay area and less desperate about veggies? good luck!

That’s what I’ve been doing so far, and the chewing has significantly decreased. If they start chewing, then I wait to give them food until they’re distracted by something else.

When Bandit starts chewing the bars, I get a willow ball.
I'm almost 100% sure she's bored when she does that and a willow ball keeps her occupied.
