Hi everyone

My guinea pig keeps getting cheilitis. I have been to the vet twice already and this clears up the problem for a bit. However it returns within a few months. Each time we have used a combination of cream and antibiotics.
I have taken tomato off the menu as this is an acidic fruit. What else can I do to stop the infection from coming back? The vet bills are getting expensive!

Thanks

Is your vet treating for bacterial, fungal or microbial?
What product (names) are you using?

Thanks for the replies. I rarely feed any kind of fruit. Probably once a month at most because of the cheilitis. I have also removed a plastic tunnel as they were nibbling at it a lot. I guess they could still be chewing on their wooden houses though...
My vet has given me loxicom (as they stopped eating during one particular bad attack), marbocyl and f10 germicidal barrier ointment. This was a bacterial and fungal joint treatment I think?

Would he consider trying itrafungol (oral solution) to tackle any fungal from the inside out as marbocyl has not worked? It very much depends what gets into the cracks in the lips individually, so it can quite a range of stuff.

I would also use fungal precautions when cleaning the cage and clean all hides and toys to ensure its not being harbored on any cage accessories where your poor piggies mouth keeps being reinfected

I guess it's back to the vets again ! Hopefully itrafungol does the trick. What could I use to clean the cage and toys? I normally use the pets at home disinfectant
Thanks for the help

I would get F10 disinfectant, it kills all types of fungal.
