Hello,

I have just adopted a new boar called Barnaby. He is the first unneutered boy I have had and now I fully understand why he was previously called Nachos. He is absolutely adorable but smells (Alex blushes) "cheesy." I first noticed this the other day during floor time when he smeared a white substance on the carpet. Closer investigation showed that it had a horrible cheesy smell. Since then, I have occasionally noticed this smell on my clothes after holding him. Nice.

Now then, I have owned several neutered boars and they haven't had this smell so I can only assume it is due to him being intact. I am used to the delightful task of keeping boars bits clean but this is a whole new field! I braved giving Barnaby a bath today and tried to give things a gentle clean 'down there' but he still smells cheesy. Any tips for keeping intact boars smelling fresh?!

What a delightful subject!

Alex

Haha, some boars are smellier than others! If you're happy giving him a good clean make sure everything is cleaned out of his sac as there can be some nasty smelling build up, particularly in non-neutered boars. Gently turn it inside out. Use a little bit of coconut oil (just a teeny bit) on the inside of the sac as this will help loosen any muck, and a little bit on the end of a cotton bud to clean any dirt off his penis as well (that can be quite smelly in some boars too!). The coconut oil should help prevent some glue or dirt holding onto his skin as well as making it smell a bit better :)

Oh that cheesy grease is vile! I call it ball grease, Archie absolutely adores rubbing that stuff all over my arm and hair. I think some smell is normal though, i mean males across all species are quite stinky, genitals do have their own natural smell.
But from my experience, he doesn't smell all the time, if he is eating or something then he doesn't smell at all, but if he is playing with me and rumblestrutting then he is very stinky.
