At the moment I use a layer of newspaper and then some hay in their hay loft. Thing is they like to use the hay loft as a bathroom so within a a day it smells like crazy. I am wondering what else I can use, other then newspaper, that is more absorbent and wont smell as quickly.

I was thinking of using cat litter as you can get 30ltrs of the stuff for about £10 but wondering if there is anything cheaper

Thankyou, that seems pretty good for the amount that you get. Apart from delivery I mean. I will have a look around to see if I can find it anywhere, hopefully I can :)

If it's only for the hay loft it should last you a reasonable amount of time. When I was using it for a single hutch it'd last me about a month but since taking on the boys I have three large cages the smallest is 2x4, it didn't last longer than three weeks. But definitely worth a try if you can, I found it helped reduce the smell greatly. :)

if you buy 3 from milbury hill you only pay delivery on the 2 this is the most cost effective way. It would last you months ;)

Aubiose is good too, a massive sack, very tightly compressed, is about a tenner from Countrywide.

Megazorb is brill we have been using it for 3 months now and are still on the first bag!! We pay £7.00 a bag from local supplier.

another good option for the hay loft is puppy pads. They are more absorbant than newspaper. I find them great for the hay loft as they are so quick and easy to change. I just roll them up with all the poop and hay and pop a new one down. B &M Bargains sell them cheap.

I looked at these in B&M and I think they were £4.99 per pack...how long would that pack last you? I think it would work out way more expensive than megazorb but i thought it was worth asking! :)

I would change the hay loft every 3 to 4 days. I haven't got a hay loft at the moment as I've had to change my set up. When I go back to having a hay loft I will be using the puppy pads again. If you find you like them you can buy in bulk for much cheaper on eBay.

I use easi bed for the rest of the cage which is similar to megazorb and just as cheap. When I get the hay loft back I will still use the puppy pads again simply because it is so easy to clean. It may work out more expensive but it's just so much less hassle for me :)

I agree about puppy pads in the hay loft, my piggies also wee in theirs. It is so easy to roll up all the waste though I do need to do it every 2-3 days or it smells (plus I worry they wee on the hay and would then eat it if I leave it too long - does anyone know if they do and if it causes them any harm?)

Torierra, I've just started using easibed, got the first lot down now. So far so good, was really easy to scoop out the wet bits.

I'm obsessed with easi-bed! I truly think it is the best thing since sliced bread. I have used sawdust, carefresh and fleece in the past. For me it beats them all hands down and is the cheapest. I literally never smell the cage anymore :) my piggies don't seem to care what bedding they have as long as there is food about they are happy

Fitch is way cheaper than megazorb or cat litter :-) I love teh stuff. Its really easy to clean out as it only sticks to itself and nothing else so literally bang the litter tray and it falls out and leaves the tray totally clean! For your money you get a 20kg bale which is huge!

Torierra, so your piggies don't have any thing on top of the easibed? I've been wondering about that but didn't like to try it in case the easibed could harm the girls in some way? I've just started using a foam material layer instead of fleece but would be happy to try without to see if the girls preferred it.

(sorry for hijacking little eskimo!)
