Hi everyone,

I have had my guinea pig for three years now, his name is Charlie. I originally bought two, however, Harry died about a year ago. Since then charlie has lived alone. I bought him plenty of toys and goodies to keep him happy. I have recently started a PGCE course and do not have as much time for him. He has become a lot quieter except at feeding times.

Should I get him a friend or would this cause more problems? Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards,
Kym.

Oh yes, yes, yes :)

I'm sure Charlie would love a friend. No matter how good we mummy's are they will always prefer company of their own kind.

If you let us know where you are located someone could suggest a rescue as they will help with bonding. Boys can be trickier than girls to find friends for.

Welcome to the forum as well :))

Hello. Charlie really does need a friend but you say you have less time for him so I am wondering if you mean you no longer have time for him and wish him to be re homed? If that is not what you meant then you must get him a friend as he will be so lonely. The best way to go about this if through the boar dating service that rescues run. Charlie will be able to choose his own friend and you will not get him a piggy he does not get along with.

Hi everyone,

Thank-you very much for your reply. He is very sociable and I know that he would love a friend but my fear was that they may not live happily together because they would not have come from the same litter. I have heard terrible stories about unhappy endings of this kind.

I live in staffordshire, any help/advise would be much appreciated.

I definately don't want to have to rehome him! ever! He is my little baby :) Its just that during the summer I had all of the time in the world for him but now I am leaving the house early and getting back late Mon-Fri. His behaviour has become similar to when Harry passed which is a bit upsetting.

Thank-you again for your replies,
Kym.

It all depends on the boys you put together. Some may not get on with any other boys, even siblings (which could mean neutering and getting a girlfriend for them). Others make very good friends. That's why boar dating is a good idea. Rescues only send home piggies that get on together. They might try Charlie with a few different guys to see who he gets on best with.

The main problem with boys is when they go through puberty, especially if they go through it at the same time. Charlie is well past that age so he might make good friends with a younger boy.

Thank-you,

I will look into it. Do you know of any sanctuaries nearby that I could get in touch with? I live in staffordshire.

I hope so too! :(

At the moment Charlie lives in a rather large two tier indoor cage. Before Harry died they both lived happily in there together. He has plenty of room but would he need a bigger home if we can find him a new little house mate? Please let me know your thoughts and thank-you :)
