i am thinking of changing from sawdust in my guinea pigs cage to fleece blankets,

just wanted some advice i was thinking of putting on the bottom layer puppy training pads to soak up there wee and then placing the fleece blanket on the top, i got some fleeces and a couple are fairly thick but would allow the wee to go through and same time be nice and cosy for them, just wanted to make sure i am doing what everyone else do when using fleeces . thanks

Hiya - I think a lot of people do use the puppy pads very successfully and I am going to try them myself soon I think

I am using the Huggies bed mats (for toddlers night time bedwetting) They are VERY good - but expensive at full price. Tesco had an offer on (not sure if still on) where you could get a pack of 7 mats for £2.39 and that works out good value I think as you can leave the mats down a good 10 days (with 2 pigs in the cage) 2 mats next to each other totally protects a 5 foot by 2 foot c and c.

How big and expensive are the puppy pads?

my local garden centre had 7 pads 60cm by 60 cm for either £1.99 or £2.99,

sounds like I would need 3 puppy pads to cover my base then - which will be cheaper than the bed mats when they are full price. Not having a puppy, I have never seen these puppy pads - I think someone mentioned poundstretcher had them? I will look out and give them a try (at the mo I am fully stocked with the bed mats that were on offer!)

Pound stretcher has them at 4 for £1, think its just the same as the ones you can buy in pet shops etc, seems cheaper but only as you get less, plus less quality! I'm using the children's bedtime mats ATM and so far not smelly!

Does that mean you only have to wash and change your fleece every 10 days?

I opened them up to have a look and they look a good size , will try it out in a few days when cage is due to be cleaned. i have also bought a potty and placed it were they usually wee and poo, hopefully they will use it once they get the idea.

lol no! I shake the fleece every day - and wash it every 3 days approx. It never seems to smell but I feel it needs washing after a few days - it has bits of hay stuck to it and it's so easy to wash anyway.

I can see by the stains on the bedmats exactly where the wee is - so if there are any heavily weed-on areas, I turn the mat but it still has a lot of not-weed areas until about 10 days are up.

Hi, I'm here asking yet more questions! So you have puppy pads/huggies mats, then 1 layer of fleece on top (and you wash the fleece every 3 days?). You spot clean every day and if there is an area of pad that is heavily wee'd on you can turn it round and it will last a few more days before it smells? You find you can get 10 days out of a pad before it smells?

Thanks

I was in poundland today and there was baby fleece blankets but they were 100% polyester are these ok or do they have to be cotton

One last question sorry lol i read somewhere that you should wash them 2 to three times before using them should i let them dry or just re wash them when they are wet?

i just use newspaper under my fleece and change it every other day, takes me about 5 mins to change the cage, i just sweep inbetween to remove poo

We got our fleece blankets from Kik, a cheap German clothes discounter and they're fine even though I don't think they're pure cotton. The piggies like them. We just put newspaper underneath, but I might try to find these puppy pads because or piggies tend to tear pices of the newspaper off. Does someone on here happen to live in Germany and know where one could find these here?

Changing from sawdust to fleece seemed like the best decision ever. A lot less rubbish and less messy and the piggies seem to like the fleece so much more.
