Hi Everyone

Guinness and Bailey have been little monkeys this week- they have a serious obsession with pulling the pegs off the side of the cage so that they can crawl under the fleece which obviously makes spot cleaning and actually cleaning them out an absolute nightmare. I don't really know why they've been doing it either but I'm not sure if they were a bit intimidated of the vast open space of the cage even though it does have lots of houses and places to hide. So today we've tried to change the cage a little to make them happier in it.

This is the cage before:

See how it's quite a big open space, do you think this is why they were burrowing under the fleece?

Today we have trapped the fleece under the cage rather than pegged it up the side so that they can't get under it and we've added a sort of low canopy. Here it is:

Do you think this will be better for them? If not, does anybody have any better suggestions as I want to make sure they feel safe as Guinness is quite a shy boy at times. I also really don't want them going under the fleece because it is so difficult to clean!

Sorry for rambling on...

Looks grand, pegging it down is sometimes the only way to stop burrowing!

It looks really nice!

But to encourage them to spend time in the litter tray maybe that could go under the canopy? And the multi-coloured house is already shelered so it could go out in the open because then they would have a safe place to go on outings too, if they are not using the whole cage as it is.

Thanks, I put that multicoloured house there to stop the centre of the canopy sagging so much as it was really droopy in the middle! lol Bailey seems to quite like running circles around it, he's a nutter!

Yes, I thought that about the litter tray too, my partner likes it there though as its easy for us reach to top up and change. They do use the tray there, I have a cute piccie of them both in there from this afternoon actually:

The boys aren't exaclty jumpy or nervous, just Guinness is fairly shy when in the cage, he's not when having floor time or cuddles though which is odd and they do explore the cage quite a bit- they have been pottering around quite a bit since we put them in this afternoon.

I'm not sure if them feeling intimidated by the space is the reason why they burrow under the fleece, I just can't think of another reason why they do it, Can you?

I love your set up, it looks amazing, very lucky piggies!
What do you put under your fleece? My little Alice piggy burrows under the vetbed to eat the newspaper rolleyes

My guinea pigs like the feel of the fleece and burrowing is natural behaviour. They have a loose piece of fleece to play with/ under- I peg it across the corner of the c & c like a curtain. Maybe if they had a piece they could play with they wouldn't want to dig up the cage liner?

Thanks for that suggestion Flips, unfortunately I've tried it and it still didn't work- my boys are such little monkeys!

Good news is they seem to be very happy with the cage as it is now, there been no attempting to get under the fleece and they're happily running and popcorning around all over the place- yay!

Good news! I think you've got active little rascals who don't mind entertaining themselves! Congratulation! Things my explorers enjoy is when I move stuff around in their cage. Try alternating the chube and their long tunnel, to them it will seem like a new cage every time! Mine also love bits of fleece (I've cut cheap blankets into fours). I drape them over a tunnel or hidey and I always find it somewhere else when I get home from work :)

My Boys like to drag little squares of fleece around too.. I just have to make sure they arent eating it..

I always put it up a bit higher:)) and tuck it into the bars and they have a real riot pulling them all down ..

It gives them some excersize as well! x
