Sorry that this is probably a little weird to talk about but my guinea pig’s poop has been fluctuating lately. She is on meds for a URI... she hasn’t been able to get rid of it yet since I got her (I think this time we will though because she is 99% better). She is about 3 months old and is completely healthy other than very minor URI symptoms. She eats and drinks just fine. Loves food. She runs and plays and does her happy sprints/popcorns. But I’ve noticed her poop has gone from normal to a bit small teardrop shaped back to normal and then back to small teardrop. It’s been a cycle for a few days and I can’t seem to understand why? I was thinking maybe she hasn’t drank quite enough because the teardropped ones normally show at night. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? She’s been on the antibiotics for a week and a half now so I figured it wasn’t the meds since it didn’t start until recently.

Which antibiotic is she on and how long is she to take it? Was she prescribed anything else? I would stop all veg for now and give her a probiotic either 2 hours before or 2 hours after you give the antibiotics. Antibiotics can unfortunately kill off the good gut bacteria as well.

I agree, a probiotic is a good idea- pro-C or fibreplex, or "poop soup" from a healthy friend- can help restore the gut bacteria balance if it is affected by antibiotics.

She is on baytril and doxycycline. 0.2 ml of each twice a day for 2.5 weeks. She was not prescribed anything else. It’s a bit odd because at first everything was fine but a little over a week into the meds her poops seemed to fluctuate a bit. She does drink less than my other pig but seems to be thirsty at night so I was curious if it was just a drinking thing but I don’t know. I have begun lessening veggies and that did seem to help a bit so I will look into giving a probiotic next

Okay thank you. I will look into those and will give her that.

If her poo is soft you should stop veg altogether rather than decreasing. Drinking can bath between piggies. Some drink more than others, but under normal circumstances they drink as much as they need.

Thank you for your responses. I did stop her veg and gave a bit of probiotic today and have noticed her poops look normal. So thank goodness. I will keep an eye on her and will keep supplementing a little each day until we are done with the meds.
