When I had my last pair of pigs a whole 12/13 years ago they were fed a guinea pig cereal mix. However at the Bradford show recently Burgess really seemed to be pushing their all in one pellet complete food. Which is generally better to feed?

Thanks in advance :)

It is best to feed a pellet food as it stops them from selective feeding. I use Burgess Excell and my piggies love it.

it really depends on the pigs. we use burgess because they all like it and it stopped them selective feeding. they used to just eat the coloured bits in the museli

Pellets all the way,

I'm fostering 2 pigs who came to me on the cereal mix and they really did just pick what they wanted meaning half the bag went to waste.
Now on pellets they clear the bowl.

Cereal food, has different bits containing different nutrients etc. so by only eating certain pieces they only get certain nutrients where as in pellets it's all in one ! also, alot of cereals mix's have seeds in which i've heard is bad for piggies, someone correct me if I'm wrong (:

I agree with everyone else, pellets are better than muesli as piggies can't feed selectively and so are getting balanced nutrients. Quite often piggies pick out the rubbish bits in muesli and leave the pellets behind, I found that when my boys were on muesli they just picked out the flaked peas and oaty bits. Also a lot of muesli mixes contain seeds and/or nuts, these are not only really fattening they can also be a choking hazard.

Pellets are best - with cereals you inevitably end up throwing away half of it, and it is most often the bits they should eat!

That said, mine have a sprinkling of cereals with their pellets, just enough to keep the choosy souls happy. I also mix and shift pellet brands to keep the piggies from going off one particular brand again or get into major trouble when it is not stock for some reason or a delivery is messed up.

Mine have a cereal mix. I am aware of selective feeding but to be honest the only one that actually is a little selective is Bounty, all the others eat everything! Especially Jake, he loves it!

Sorry I'm a little late at joining the thread here! I have 9 guinea pigs myself which was obviously very expensive utill I found this new pellet feed (and they seem to love it)! Thought you all might be interested to know what it is and how to get some so I have made it available for sale on my website.

It's much cheaper than Burgess at £15 per sack, and can be delivered too!

As a breeder you are not going to get a good reception around here selling your food as people will see it as supporting your breeding. Your animals are very cute and look very healthy but folks around here will prefer to buy from a non breeder such as marsdens food online or they will choose something like wagg optimum as its cheaper.

Firstly, I am aware of selective eating.

I mainly feed my 5 on hay, and fresh veg and fruit. The cereal is just an added extra, and what they are given is all gone by morning. :)
