Cavy temperature control options

ok its wintertime in China now...or well its approaching at least, needless to say its getting pretty darn chilly.

how do you keep your guinea pigs warm?

my house isnt insulated....I'm basically living in a hollowed out concrete cinder block. its only warm if i keep my air conditioner on heat mode....but thats only for one room of my house,

once they retire to their sleeping cage i close the door and take them to my room for the night and let them play in the large cage for most of the day...
now this will only work for the next couple weeks or so... how does everyone deal with heating if central heating or furnaces are not an option?

electric heat pad under the cage?

space heater?

hot water bottle wrapped in a towel?

cage full of hay for insulation?

please give me a heads up i need to begin to make winter preparations for my boys now
 
there is a thread somewhere called cold weather care, with some good ideas on it. if you use the search button I'm sure it will appear :)
 
Hi Kash

First insulate the cage - bubble wrap, polystyrene tiles etc

Give them plenty of hay to snuggle in

If you can manage a hot water bottle wrapped in fleece or snuggle safe that would be good on colder nights

If you can;t get the stuff in China then Pm me and I;ll see what i can do to send it over......

Remember it;s not the low temperature per se that is bad for piggies -its the daily variation....any more than 10 degC between night and day and the piggie might suffer environmental shock and as a result be prone to respiratory and other infections.........
...so let them get cool gradually down to say 8deg C (with associated moult/coat change to cope with colder temps) and if below this then think about additional heating......

i use an old fashioned stone hot water bottle that they cant chew! And i wrap in either a towel or a fleece and place it between their pigloos x

Hope you get sorted x
