I try to buy my substrate locally - am currently using Hemp for the piggies but the most local place to buy substrate only sells Hemcore. We have to go further afield for Aubiose which is citronella free.
I prefer to use hemp because it composts down so quickly and because it's plant material I can put it straight into the green bin together with their poo and hay.
Anyway! Whilst buying a big bag (10kg) of Science Selective pellets from our local Farm and Pet Supplies place (am getting through pellets a lot quicker with the new additions lol! x)) I found a new product that is produced very close to us.
It's called 'Cavianthus' and it's made from Miscanthus grass. There's information on their website (( Here )) . They had a bag open for you to feel and it was really, really soft.
The description is thus:
I just wondered what other people think of it? I think I'll probably try it next time round if no-one can think of a reason not to! xx
ETA: I prefer using substrate as I find it easier than fleece. When I get a bigger cage for the piggles I plan to have a fleecey section for them to flop out in if they want to but I like having hay and substrate for them to tunnel through and forage in.

Customer benefits:
Miscanthus is an annually harvested crop grown around the UK for the supply of bio-fuel to energy supply sectors and is a truly natural and sustainable crop that is environmentally friendly. Miscanthus bedding (Elephant Grass) grows very tall up to 15ft, and when processed is an extremely warm and fibrous bedding that is more absorbent than any other straw based product or shavings. It can be used the same way as any other bedding either deep litter or a shallow covering on rubber mats, all depending on the preferences of the owners. Because of its high absorbency it lasts longer than other beddings therefore making it a very economical bedding.
