Hello
So my guinea pig went in for a dental last Thursday, thankfully all went well and she is back to her usual self.
However the reason I went for the dental in first place was due to her drooling a lot. She never used to do this. The vet had said it was her teeth, but when the put her under anaesthetic the vet said her teeth weren’t actually that bad. The vet did still file it back a little.
This was 2 days ago only but I notice she does still drool. Maybe not as much as she did before the dental though. This is the only symptom she has. Weight wise she has actually gained weight in the past 2 weeks even when her teeth hadn’t been done (from 0.93kg to 0.95kg) she is only a small guinea pig and this is pretty consistent with what she has been the past year.
I am still worried about the drooling. So I just wondered if anything else could be causing it? I’m very worried it’s something more sinister…
The drooling is the only symptom she has. She eats, drinks, poops, plays, runs, popcorns etc all fine. Only symptom is the drooling.
Just wondering if any ideas what could be causing it? This is something that has only come on the past month.

Hi, drooling is often associated with teeth issues although if your girl is maintaining her weight, she’s obviously eating enough hay.

Does her breath smell at all? Usually a wet dishcloth kind of smell points towards oral thrush which could also cause drooling

Is there anyway you could get to Northampton? Simon and Kim Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit care clinic in Northampton are the go to vets for anything teeth related

Hi no her breathe doesn’t smell. Simon and Kim Maddock are an 8 hour drive from me one way! But I was looking into going there for the next dental (if she needs it or the drooling gets worse), my vets refused to do dental without anaesthetic (and I was so worried!) so it would be ideal to get to them

I know that @Bill & Ted used to travel to Northampton from Cornwall with her dental pigs and they coped with the journey very well. If you can get there, I would fully recommend it.

If she has the space and the time, @furryfriends (TEAS) offers boarding for guinea pigs who live far away with dental issues who need to see Simon and Kim. May be she could help. She runs a sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental issues so has lots of experience

What about the lady in Matlock (the guinea pig vet I think she’s called?) is she any good? She is still 7 hours away but still a little closer and I can actually get accommodation through family friend that will put us up for a night (guinea pigs included!)

That will be Ellie Whitehead at Dewent valley vets in Matlock. I’ve heard good things about her too and she does conscious dentals. She was actually trained by Simon Maddock. Worth looking in to

Please can I correct this. She wasn’t trained by Simon. He’s never met her. She watched Kim Maddock do a conscious dental! There was no actual training given.
