At the moment I use Megazorb in the hutch but the boys have 2 litter trays - one under the hay rack and one in the bedroom - they are lined with newspaper and megazorb and then topped up with hay, I usually find that I just need to chance them every couple of days and the rest of the hutch needs minimal spot cleaning.

My question is, is there any kind of cat litter which I can use in the trays and would it be better then megazorb - I'm thinking about smell reduction when the time comes to bring them inside for the winter. I am aware would still need to clean them out regularly.

Thanks

Andrea

Thanks - I was looking at the packet of a friends wood pellet one when I was looking after her cat and it said it was suitable for guineas, although it was from P@H, it just got me thinking if there was anything I could use in the litter trays

May have to get some of the rabbit litter to try

You do need to be very careful about most cat litters, but I do use the wood pellet cat litter. It's basically wood shavings, super- compressed so should be piggie safe if it has no other additives. You have to make sure it isn't chemically treated though so if you aren't doing that research may be better safe than sorry. Mind tried to eat it for about two minutes the first time we used it, quickly realised it tasted nothing like bell pepper or carrot, and never bothered again.

Wood pellets or paper based pellets are safe for guinea pigs. It's the silica type that is not safe.

Are you planning to switch to fleece?

Since you're using megazorb now, you can use it in the litter box when you move them inside. They're used to it and more likely to use the box than on fleece.

I use the wood pellet litter in my guinea pigs litter trays, and it works really well. They tried to chew it a bit when I first used it, but soon gave up when they realised it wasn't edible. :))

I use a double layer of folded newspaper to line the trays, then put a single layer of wood pellets on top, and this usually lasts 2-3 days before even being close to needing to be changed.

The only thing I would say is to be careful when you are getting near the end of a bag as there can be quite a lot of dust at the bottom. I actually chuck the last bit in a sieve before putting in the litter tray to get rid of the dust. Anyone would think I'm a nutter if they were to see me sieving cat litter! inbreeding

I use Tesco wood cat litter (brown bag) on my buns and I did use it with McMac :)

To make sure that the animals don't try munching at it I put a piece of newspaper on the top and then cover it in hay, so even if they were to try digging down into the hay they would meet a sheet of newspaper instead of the litter. So it is like newspaper, litter, newspaper, hay. Never had any problems with it while I do that trick :) My lot aren't really diggers anyway, they are more interested in the food in the hay rack lol

Also I noticed that the Tesco wood litter breaks apart really nicely when it is wet so if your pig was curious and had a nibble it shouldn't cause any blockages

Thanks everyone - once they come in for the winter I will have a try with everything - I may put them on fleece, think the first few weeks I will be experimenting to see which I prefer
