Hi all!

This afternoon I nicked one of my piggie's nails while trimming. Thought it was just a little dot and put quick stop on it.

Maybe 30 min later I found fresh blood dots in her cage...her foot bloody and blood on her belly (from the foot). šŸ˜± I got it to stop with a good amount more quick stop. It's unclear whether another toe got cut by the scissors. She striggled a little when they were near her foot.

Anyway, my question is: Should I do anything more later tonight or tomorrow? Thinking clean it and maybe some silver cream? I don't want it to open up again and I also don't want it to get infected!

I also have meloxicam...she's getting around fine, but I don't want her to have any discomfort.

Thanks!

She's adorable! I have no advice just wanted to confirm she is cute šŸ„°
Awww! That's our Cinnamon. She's very special. EXTREMELY skittish and shy. She doesn't even wheek lest she draws attention to herself. Sometimes if she's REALLY excited she'll let out a little peep, or blow air which sounds like a kid who doesn't know how to whistle yet šŸ„°

And she is gorgeous...

Hi and welcome

You can disinfect the foot in some saline solution (mild disinfectant) once the bleeding has firmly stopped if you wish to. It is easily available from a pharmacy or you make it at home by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into 250 ml/ 1/2 pint of boiled cooled water. No further measures are needed. A cut to the quick rarely leads to an infection and the nail will grow back.

Your piggy may be more reluctant to cooperate next time you cut the nails so you may want to make use of our piggy whispering tips: Understanding Prey Animal Instincts, Guinea Pig Whispering and Cuddling Tips

Thank you! Saline is a great idea. I may try that later. I wouldn't normally worry about a cut to the quick, but I suspect she may have gotten a cut from the edge of the scissors on a different toe. It was hard to tell where it was all coming from. And then with all the quick stop clumped on it.

I will clean it and take a closer look, maybe in the morning or later tonight.

Thanks so much!

Cornflour is my choice.
I always have a dish at hand when we do nail trimming as I have a very wriggly pig and one bleed is almost inevitable.
