Today the gf and I went to Pets at Home to get some more hay. There was a boar in the Pig enclosure and the gf felt really sorry for him because he was on his own in a huge pen. I think the fact that he was rather cute and had a mohican hair style helped. Anyway the boar dating thing didn't happen because of various health and weather related reasons and after much deliberation I convinced her to have him, for his sake and so Charlie finally had a friend again. So this is my fault.

Anyway we got the little fella home, cleaned out the cage and put them both in. We had a separater in there so they could get used to each other first. They were sticking their noses through and Charlie was really excited. Dougal (the new pig) managed somehow to push the divider out of the way and get in with Charlie when our backs were turned. Much chasing, humping, squeeking ensued. After a minute I re-secured the separator but before I could grab Dougal they were rumble strutting, teeth chattering and then BAM a full on scrap. Dougal bit Charlie and make him shriek and run away, Dougal chased him.

Long story short we just had to return Dougal. GF upset and feeling guilty, both pigs unhappy. GF getting a refund and giving it to a pig charity.

Lesson here kids, do this properly. Boar dating is an awesome idea, do it. Don't let your heart rule your head and don't buy pigs just because you feel sorry for them.

There's a good lesson for us all in this - sometimes we find things out the hard way but if we can learn from it and pass the experience on to others then some good comes out of it - good on you for posting :)

This is why boar dating is the best idea. Hopefully other's will learn from your experience.

Yup, that was the idea of the post, for others to learn.

Charlie is okay on his own I think, but he did get very excited by having a friend. Just a shame they didn't like him.

Thank you for being so honest and posting about your experience.
Just like us humans our piggies like to choose who they want to be friends with.
Good luck with the dating when it happens, I hope Charlie finds a friend soon.

I wouldn't give up - I would approach other rescues it'd be lovely for him to have a friend that he liked.

She'd resigned herself to not getting a friend for him after the snow, then illness, then snow again stopped us getting to the boar dating place. But she seen the little fella in the shop today and felt really sorry for him, she's too nice.

If she does decide to get another one she will definitely give boar dating another go. We both just made a wrong decision on the spur of the moment today.

Perhaps you could make the right decision and contact Suzy at Glynneath. She's lovely and helped pair my boar up.

The fact that he was excited says he would like a friend, I bet you don't like everyone you meet. If someone said here you go, this is your new friend you can spend the rest of your life with them without any thought of if or not you liked them then perhaps you'd bite them to.

It's unfair to leave him on his own, as he's so young and had a companion once before.

If they don't want to be friends maybe you could have a pig side by side at least he would have someone to chat to if he was lonely, as none of us can be with them 24 hrs a day.

I hope your Girlfriend has a change of heart - as it really is better for them to have friends.

Yup it was Suzy that we failed to meet before, today wasn't planned it was just one of those things, I wouldn't do it again and i'd advise others not to. Unfortunately we don't have room for another cage so a live in boar is what we need.

Suzy doesn't hold grudges so contact her again. Suzy is very much about the pigs. :)!

Aww, get him a friend before he gets too old to accept one. Definately take him dating so he can choose his own pal.
