Caramel started loosing weight with the rest of her companions when mal got towards the end in july. We have since lost nugget (mystery weight loss also on 28th august) and she has continued to loose a small amount of weight. She is currently down from a starting weight of just over 800g to 620g. She went back to the vets today (lost count of what number vet check we are on) her teethies are back to normal (were slanty on vet check #1) she's had 2 weeks of baytril and a course of panacur a few weeks ago, initially started gaining weight back but then started to loose again while still on baytril. There are no obvious outward symptoms so they took a urine sample today and there's a little blood. So she's booked in for blood tests Wednesday and she's got sulfatrim and metacam for now, if she doesn't drastically improve then she'll have the bloods to see if we can get any answers there! She is eating/ pooing/ has gut sounds though her tummy feels quite empty apparently.
I'm getting just a little bit worried because both mal and nugget started with mystery weight loss, although mal had a number of issues discovered on x Ray and nugget was 4.5, a pah piggy and had secondary dental issues, it seems odd they all started loosing weight at the same time and since we have lost 2 of them I am a little anxious. She seems okay in herself in terms of eating etc but then so did they till the final couple of days.
The current theories for caramel are either a uti, sterile cystitis or a possible kidney issue. 🤔 she is 2.5 😔 I think kidney issue is unlikely so fingers crossed for something simple.

Sending hugs to you :hug:what a dreadful time you are having. I hope you can find some answers with Caramel, it’s such a worry when they loose weight for no apparent reason 🤞

Thankyou for the support 🥰 she had lost a little more this morning, fingers crossed for a gain tomorrow before the bloods! If she improves enough by the recheck at 11:30 she may not need them. Wish us luck 🥺 it's so frustrating when they loose weight to a point that it simply cannot be 'normal' yet to look at them they are perfectly healthy! It makes no sense at all! I hope we get some answers soon I'm starting to feel upset just at the sight of the scales, and I'm spending a small fortune on emeraid! 🙈

i have a piggy that gradually lost weight,he is only 700grams,in his prime was 1.2 kgs.He has been on Thyronorm for a year, hyperthyrodism.he has maintained his weight at 700grams,he is nearly 7 years of age,he still runs around and keeps up with his 3 wives.I'm sorry you have a piggy going through this, though it maybe helpful to check the thyroid.you have had a difficult time recently and my thoughts go out to you.x

I hope Caramel starts to feel better soon. It is such a worry when they are poorly but you can’t find out what is the cause. Good luck at the vets.

Thankyou, I will ask about getting this checked tomorrow, i never thought about that! 🙂 I keep thinking maybe it is just normal but then realistically would she loose 1/4 of her body weight at 2 years old for no reason?

i agree there must be something going on.Pain is often a part of it.I'm sorry you are going through this.needs thorough examnation, and tests such as ultrasound, xrays.its so difficult.you are doing all you can.xx

I will ask about us/xray too thankyou, maybe of her bladder given there was a little blood. She does seem a bit brighter with metacam I must admit, I'm really hoping for a gain tomorrow! 💖

Mystery weight loss is always such a worry for us slaves. I hope that you can soon get to the bottom of it. How is she in herself?

She is eating/pooping normally. She is a little quiet but still runs away etc, it's so strange! She will eat emeraid from a bowl as well as her usual food so I'm currently just happy she is eating! I thought it was just grief initially then we had periods of slanty teeth which went back to normal but she continues to fluctuate with a downwards trend weight wise! Hopefully we either find something easy to fix or she really is okay and it's just one of those things.

OK so her x Ray is free from problems, she's had urine sent off, a blood smear and fluids but they could not get enough blood out of her for full testing. We have the option of them attempting again next week or going for a referral to Ellie the guinea pig vet. I've left my details with derwent valley vets and I've sent ellie an email with the problem and she should get back to me when she's next in on Friday. I can then see if going there is going to be feasible around work/ kids or if to retry at my vets. I can't see any reason why my vets can't retry but... I'm also considering the referral 🤔, I'm a little stressed, she did great with the anesthetic though :)

Caramel had diarrhea (full on cow pats) on Saturday so her antibiotics were stopped and she was given fibreplex. We have a zoom consult with Ellie the guinea pig vet tomorrow morning and then she's booked back in with my vets at 5pm. Poop is now solid but small and there isn't a lot of it currently, but she is still eating. Her weight is fairly stable at 610g, she is peeing blood.

Good luck with the zoom call and vet appointment. I hope Caramel is soon on the mend.

My vet has ordered thyroid treatment to trail 🙂 if that doesn't work we will see if ic treatment works 🙂 her protein creatine ratio is a little high depending on what reference you look at. 590g today, fingers crossed for a successful trail of medication 🤞
🤞I do hope this works for Caramel, sending hugs x
