So one of my friends has a pair of guinea pigs, and today I went round to her house as she asked me for help cleaning their cage, she has the same sized c&c cage as me (6ft x 4ft) and I thought it wouldn't be so bad. I got around to her house, took the piggies and things out of the cage and the bottom was filthy! The was poo stuck solid to the bottom of the cage! So I spent 3 and a half hours cleaning the cage for her, it is spottless now and her girls are enjoying themselves but I can't help but feel sorry for the girls, I wonder how long they had gone without being cleaned or how long they will go from now. Truth be told I was quite angry with my friend when I saw the state of that cage, poor things.

Aww that's so sad, did you confront your friend over it? I hate situations like that they're so difficult! At least they're happy and clean now xx

I did yes, although I've told her countless times that it's a MUST to keep them clean, as much as I hate to say it I'm considering getting her to give them to a rescue or someone who will properly look after them xx

If you cleaned it out single handedly, how come she couldn't? Is she new to guineas? If so maybe give her a chance and stipulate that she may leave it no longer than a week or however long would be recommended for a 6x4. It may just be too overwhelming for her, maybe she should make the cage a bit smaller and change them more often if she struggles to maintain the routine x

She said she couldn't get it off the bottom of the cage, so I came baring a scourer and pet disenfectant! lol and yeah, this is her first set of piggies, she loves them to pieces but putting it bluntly she's lazy, she is fully aware that she has to do it, but she just cant be bothered most times. I will hopefully get her into a routine of doing things and help her out from time to time x

It sounds to me like she is very fond of you and probably admires what you have with your pigs deep down though it might just not be her "thing". She deserves a chance, but be careful that she doesn't start relying on you. Maybe if she is so new to it that it might be wise to downsize and gradually add sections once she gets into the swing of it x

No worries, I hope it all works out, keep me posted xx
