Hi I'm looking for advice on what to do about my Guinea Pig Coco! I have two Peruvians (Long haired) one is super easy to groom and will let me brush and cut her hair no problem, I don’t even have to hold her. The other one Coco is the problem! She lets me brush her head and the top of her back but as soon as I even get near her butt or lower back she freaks out. It’s gotten so bad that she has matts there now because no matter how hard I try she runs when I brush her butt. I’ve tried holding her in a towel and giving her veggies she likes, but nothing works! I‘ve tried cutting the matts out of but she runs away and I'm scared of cutting her by accident. I’ve also given her baths to help but it only helps a little. I don’t know what to do and feel like a terrible owner because I’m sure her matts hurt!

Have a look our grooming guide in the Daily Care Section. I can't link in on this device. There is some information on how to groom skittish piggies. I wrote the guide so hope you find it useful. Also you could try the Piggy Whispering techniques that are in the Guides at the top of the page.

:agr:
Have a look in the grooming guides as there are lots of helpful suggestions there.

When we had a skittish rabbit who need grooming we used a small pair of battery powered clippers instead of scissors to make sure we didn't accidentally cut him.
It also helps to have another person to give you a hand if possible.

It took months for my Leo to get used to grooming but he finally came round to it. I used a soft baby brush every day. Try exude confidence if you can. If you’re feeling anxious then it’s possible that Coco may sense it and in turn feel more anxious herself.

It took me about 2 years to get Betsy to sit still when she was being groomed. It took a lot of hard work to get her to sit as still as she is in the videos in the grooming guide.

Bless her. She’s gone from being a scaredy-pig to a GPF star 😁

I’ve found trying to brush long haired pigs traumatic for both me and them and just cut off any matted fur now.

Thankyou!

We put our Edgar in a PVC tube with his face in a bowl of food to trim his butt. Edgar is a drama queen, hates scissors, clippers are apparently his mortal enemy, but him in a tube with his face in some food and his butt hanging out seems to work! At least for the moment...

He hates being brushed as well, so I do it often for a short amount of time. He rejected all the special pet brushes I bought, so instead he shares my tangle teaser (sigh).

We're working on a full body haircut, but it's slow-going.
