Hi, I have recently adopted three piggies and allow them to free range in my garden during the day. My garden is not huge, but has lots of hiding places and a huge trampoline. My problem is catching them to put them to bed, it's stressful for all of them as I walk round trying to catch them. Also it stresses me out and I get frustrated. I want them to have the space my garden offers but don't want this stressful ritual every evening. Will they learn to come to me eventually or is it always going to be a game of chase? My husband says we should section off a pen in the garden for them so it will be easier to locate them. Is this the only way? Thank you for any advice!

Allowing guinea pig's to free range in your garden can be very dangerous and i would urge you to create or buy a run with a secure cover or lid.

Guinea pigs are prey animals, so a number of animals, from cats to foxes could come into your garden for them, also the stress of being chased around the garden is much more reduced in a small area such as a run.

Also you could try getting them to go into a bed or climb into something and then you pick them up with that.

Our piggies used to free range the lounge and we had the same issue (have too many now of both genders) We used to use willow tubes to usher them into then pick them up to put to bed but as you say, it can be a long process...
I would consider a nice large run for them or as hubby says, a smaller section that you can access at their bedtime, arm yourself with a box, upturned pigloo or something secure to pop them into - less chasing for all (and less stress)
Good luck :)

Hi, thanks for your reply. My garden is very safe as regards cats and foxes as the walls are just too high for any to jump over. Also the piggies have several hidey places that are too tiny for a cat to enter. I am just very sad that I have to pen them in as they so love zooming around.

My piggies also seem way too smart to seek refuge in a box as they know they will be caught that way, they prefer to zoom around and hide under the trampoline where I really can't get them! I will be penning off a section of the garden I think, as you have suggested.
