Hi
***I'm not promoting the sale of this***
I'm posting a few pictures they come from one of my local selling sites.... most people on the selling site will see a stunning looking 'house'..... that's not what I see and I've left comments voicing my concerns.
Do you see the lovely looking hutch first or do you see what I see?
Here's how his post reads...... Luxury hutches built to order. Let me know your budget and I'll design and build just for you. 2 week build time. Can be plastic lined or just wood. All wood is pressure treated and varnished. Can be coloured on request. Mesh or Perspex window. Large hutches range from £350 to £550 fully plastic lined out like the one in the photo. Message me with your budget and requirements so I can work out a build time for you. Free delivery up to 25 miles. Can negotiate delivery.

Lack of ventilation? The perspex will turn it into an oven in summer?
Yep that's the first thing I thought of too plus it looks like there is no ventilation at all by the looks of things with the Perspex option unless those windows in the roof are Perspex free, the sleeping area doesn't look big enough to move in , the whole hutch looks too small , no where to put a water bottle and is he using safe paint etc?

It looks lovely! But like it's already been mentioned, practicality is zero.

They are being made to look good with no thought to the poor animals who have to live in them! Fancy perspex lining them! And the sleeping area is very small! I wonder how many animals he is saying that can live in there?

Well done you ! Hopefully , you've saved some people from wasting an incredible amount of money .
Hiya @PiggyOwner , thank you :D . This is still playing on my mind it doesn't help that in one photo there is a run so it's possible they have a small furry living in one of these already :(. I'm going to send him a private message and explain the impractical points of his creation x

Here's my message to the chap......

Hi Jonathan, I didn't mean to offend you at all with my replies to your post your hutch is honestly stunningly beautiful but it's not practical in a few ways I hope you will take on board my concerns with the design as I'm sure you don't want to be cruel to animals and let let them suffer. I have had guinea pigs for years and I'm fully aware of how they should be cared for so I noticed the following.

1) Perspex isn't safe at all the way it's used in your design it makes the hutch like a green house and there isn't any ventilation, that hutch in the photo doesn't look like there are any holes at all so they can breath it looks sealed with wood and Perspex. Simply only making mesh fronts hutches would he perfect and would still look nice.

2) the size... it must be a minimum size for rabbits and guinea pigs I could find this out for you if you want me too. As many animals sadly don't get to leave their hutches so it's like us being locked up in a tiny room 24/7 if you make them too small.

3) the bedroom area has no room from them to turn, move etc it should be square not rectangle.

4) small animals wee and wee a lot plastic coating the hutch is not only costly to you but it makes the hutch slippery, hot, and if not cleaned often it will mean the animal could be sleeping in a pool of wee. Ive put Lino on the floor of all my hutches as do many owners as it saves the floor being effected by the wee.

5) they need a water bottle having a Perspex front means they want have anywhere to hang a water bottle not many rabbits and guinea pigs drink from a bowl, you could end up having you hutch returned once the owner noticed that.

6) the varnish and paint can not just be any it has to be safe for the animal as they will chew the hutch again I could find out which are safe for you if you wanted me too.

I hope you will listen to these tips please Jonathan and continue to make your beautiful hutches with the above info in mind.

There are two forums one is....the guinea pig forum and there is a rabbit equivalent that are full of the info you need and are run my experts
All the best

@PiggyOwner does this sound ok

Sounds good - and very tactful

That is a very good message! Very tactfullly pu.

This is not a criticism in any way so please don't take it as such and please don't take offence what you are doing to help piggies and rabbits is wonderful. I just wanted your message to sound a bit better that is all and I have spotted a couple of typos and how things can read better (can't help it I am an ex secretary!).

They are:-

As I said earlier please don't take this as a criticism! I am an ex secretary and am professionally trained to read and change things (my old boss was appalling!). Like you I only want to help these animals.

Noted thank you @Betsy

His reply...... (this is the end part it didn't copy and paste it all...back in a mo)

I note that Lino when chewed breaks up into small chunks and if swallowed would be deadly to a Guinea Pig. Once the surface of lino is scratched and damage will soak up urine and cause bacteria issues. Warm place to grow. Replacing Lino regularly is expensive. Lino is generally made up of a few layered which can delaminate.

This first part.....

The hutch has been very practical and our 3 boys love it. They have a run bigger than most people's gardens. All 3 boys have been together from baby and cannot be separated. They are very healthy and have a great diet

1. Perspex or mesh is an option. There's lots of ventilation built in to the hutch. You can't see it.
2.this hutch is 6' long, I can build to any size.
3. The bedroom is big enough for anything to turn in as it's built to size of the animal being kept.
4. Plastic is free so not expensive. Bacteria treated, has a texture so not slippery. Owners should be keeping the hutch clean and check every day, as we do.
5. Water bottle is mounted on the wall inside on a bracket, not in photo.
6.the interior is not varnished on all wood hutches.

My wife works at the college of animal welfare is a lecturer there.

I appreciate your comments though. You make a lot of assumptions about the hutch which you clearly know nothing about how it was designed or built.

Kind regards

Well I tried :(:(:(:( , I just hope the owners of the Perspex hutches care about their fur babies enough to keep the hutch out of the sun and check on them many many times a day in warm weather :(:(. It appears if your an animal welfare lecturer you feel this green house style hutch is fine I personally beg to differ and I only work at sainsburys!

I think that is an awful attitude to take! Just because his wife is happy doesn't mean to say his animals are! I makes me so angry! GRRRRRR!
