My boyfriends gran has a cat which practically is outside her house most of the time, and over the past few weeks my bf has noticed its looking not very well, its got slightly long hair, and he said it looked as though bg chunks of it fur had come away, and its just not looking v healthy, his gran feeds it milk and the odd tid bit but as she doesnt own it thats as far as it goes
.
I was saying maybe he should take it to a vet, or talk to a vet about it, as if it does have an owner then they are obv not looking after it properly, but on the other hand if we take the cat to the vets and it belongs to someone are we in the wrong? there is no blue cross around here so we cant call them, my mum saved a few cats a couple of years ago and said she took them to a vet who then rang a cat sanctuary who took the cats, but if this cat has an owner and we do that then I'm wondering if we can into trouble?

i dont want this cat to suffer, and it seems to be around most the time, doesnt wear a collar either if thats a sign it has no owner!?

any opinions on what to do?

(btw we are gunna buy it some proper cat food first to see if the cat is malnutritioned, as if it doesnt have an owner then it wont be getting any food exceot from rats/mice that it catches and what hs gran is giving it, shes a really friendly cat)

Awwwwwwww. I'm not sure. But can't you follow it? Or maybe put a collar on with a note, then see what happens?

One of our cats is forever losing his collar and getting into scrapes

think the cats welfare is most important thing here, if some one does own it they obviuolsy are not looking after it properly and in my way of thinking dont deserve the cat, so I would go to a vet with no worrys

yeah maybe, i was thinking of asking round her neighbours, apparently she talked to like a 4yr old a while ago n he said it was his..but you know what 4yr olds are like!  98)

when its raining do cats normall go home? it was chucking it down the other night and he said the cat was huddled up on the floor under the little roof at the front door of his grans house

Buttons stays out! Whereas Tatty will come in - he goes all soggy if he ends up getting wet!

Although, you can't be too sure if the cat has an illness making him be that way?

true, i shall talk to my bf later on and see what he thinks is best, he knows her neighbours better than me, even if we can get hold ofd the owner we might be able to talk to them about the cat and sort its problems out, i havent seen the cat for na few weeks so i dunno how bad it is, i might get my bf to take me over and have a look myself.

Is the milk she is giving it cows milk or special cats milk? Because believe it or not cats are very intolerant of cows milk, and this could be making it ill, it did the same thing to our cat before we realised, he lost weight and hair in big patches.

I'm guessing its cows milk, thanks for that i'll tell my bf to tell his gran not to give it to her anymore, i didnt realise that.

well i went to the shop today and bought a big bag of complete cat food for adult cats, so hopefully this will prevent his gran giving the cat the milk, and she will feed it with this (shes not a gran who listens) so were hoping she does, i said to pete make her listen! poor cat, and if it doesnt pick up having this food theni think a call to a vet may be in order.

just a quick update, Ive been to see the cat for myself today she is painfully thin, her fur is quite matter up too..poor little , so we went out n bought her some wormer and a flea collar just incase, i couldnt see any fleas on her, but being so thin i thought its best we treat her for worms, we bought some cat meat and biscuits and got her a bowl too and were going to take her to the vets next week hopefully for a check up and to get them to sort her matted hair out, we both feel a bit bad if its someone elses cat but like my bf said if they do have an owner and start on us for taking it to the vets etc then he'll just hope they like their visit from the rspca, because thats who we will be calling if she does belong to someobody, shes a bag of bones :( and doesnt look well looked after.
