Hi
Firstly a quicky history! I have two male piggies, one is 1.5yrs old and the other is only 8 weeks old... we bought the baby one when we lost one of our older piggies a few weeks ago. The smaller piggie has never lived outside as the hutch was indoors from the start of the cold spell, but this now seems to be over (hopefully).

My question is, can I now put the hutch back outside? What's the best way to do this with the least affect on the piggies health? I don't have a shed that I could put them in, but my OH has built a shelter in which the hutch sits (off the ground) and I would cover the top and sides of the hutch with a blanket at night with the front of the hutch shielded from the draught.

Any help will be very much appreciated, especially as the piggie that we lost was very much loved, and we don't want to lose the younger one by not doing this correctly.

Happy New Year!
Leigh, Chip and Pip!

I wouldn't put an indoor pig (or partially outdoor pig) out until at least May. One cold spell has broken, I am sure there will be many more, and the temperature changes can be fatal. xx

I agree you will need to keep them in until the end of spring, it would be too dangerous to put them out now.

unless you cover them up with thick blankets and tarpaulin they will be fine and live in substantial hutches I.e Thick wood which keeps the warmth in they should be fine, people tend to forget they live in the desert and so used to cold evenings.

If you have to move them back out, I would make sure I had a snugglesafe in the hutch at night.

If they are in at the moment it will be a shock to them to be put outside. I went out early this morning about 6 and it was really really cold. Mine are indoors and wont go out until the weather is much much warmer, if then, I kind of like them wheeking at me when I go upstairs...

I would leave it a while as others have said the weather may change again and also it will be harder on the baby. Leave it until early spring :)

I don't think the cold weather has even started yet, so as others have said, I would aim to keep them indoors for many more weeks.
