Hi,

I think we could be about to lose our beautiful 7.5 year old guinea pig. She has bounced back from many things and the vet described her as hardy as guinea pigs come which is a huge compliment.

She has bounced back from UTIs in the past but is peeing a lot of blood and antibiotics aren't helping so I'm worried we may be nearing the end.

HOWEVER she is still happy hungry and loving.

Is the only downside of feeding pea flakes that they are fattening? If so she is only 830g so will there be any bad consequences of spoiling her?

I don't want to do anything to prevent her bouncing back as she is so strong, we still have hope!

Thanks so much!

Hello how amazing your piggy is 7.5 years old ❤️
I know pea flakes are fattening but I vaguely remember hearing too many can cause bloat …I’m not sure if it is true…..hopefully someone with experience and knowledge will come along with advice.
It’d be lovely to see a photo of this amazing piggy 🥰

I had a senior gpig with heart failure. He lost almost ALL his weight and looked like a skeleton. I fed him as much as he wanted - treats, veggies, etc, knowing that he didn't have long. I don't know about pea flakes but I would say treat your pig as much as you want as long as the food isn't going to cause issues if given in excess!

Yes, please post a picture of her. She sounds amazing. She has obviously been very well looked after.

Spoil her to your heart's content- I believe Emiology (on YouTube) did a similar thing with one of her elderly rats on his last day.
I think that your piggy has achieved what most of us wish for- living a long happy life surrounded by those we love.
I hope she does continue to bounce back, but if not please be assured that she's lived a lovely piggy life.
P.S. I guess the vets have ruled out bladder stones?

What an amazing age she is, I’d spoil her with whatever she wants as long as it doesn’t upset her tummy

Bladder stones are definitely not ruled out unfortunately :( at the moment the vet is hoping the blood is due to stress caused by a very recent reoccurring abscess, or possibly a deep set urine infection. She has had an injection to line her bladder wall today and is finishing up the course of antibiotics that she was already on. The vet also managed to get a urine sample to send off 🤞

If no improvement she will need a conscious X ray or ultrasound to search for stones, a thick bladder wall, or tumours 💔 but hoping it won't come to that.

Thank you so much for your support!

Here is my gorgeous girl! She is such a tough cookie. When we got her in May 2016, we realised very quickly she was already pregnant at what was probably too young of an age. She gave birth to four beautiful babies, the last one of which we lost at Christmas time. Her hind legs were never quite the same after giving birth so young. She lost her hearing at about the age of 4 and it was probably the best thing to ever happen to her as she became so much happier, confident and more relaxed. She has overcome Chlamydia, several mild UTIs, and copes with an abscess that keeps recurring on her bits 😰 At the age of 7.5, she is developing cataracts and her hind legs have muscle wastage. Through it all she is so affectionate, bright and loving, and I genuinely think she loves life 😍😍😍 the photos I've hopefully attached below are from today after got back from the vets. Awww lovely girl xx

She's lovely, what a tough little old lady she is!

Last summer our elder pig, Leela, was diagnosed with an internal mass and we were told she probably didn't have long. We took her home on pain meds and decided that she was going to get whatever she wanted to make her last days happy. Her favorite food was romaine lettuce so we basically let her have all the romaine lettuce she could eat every single night. She surprised the vet and went on to live another 9 or 10 months... she had a feast every single night of those months! We miss her a lot after she eventually passed, but it does make me happy to know that she had a great life, and in her last months she had a freaking luxurious lifestyle with a catered all-you-can-eat buffet every evening! Just give your lovely lady all the treats she loves... she deserves it and you'll never regret making her happy in her old age! Best wishes to both of you and hope she is eating copious pea flakes to her heart's content for a long, long time yet!

She is a beautiful piggy and loves life with you. Spoil her with her favourite treats - she deserves it.

These old lady pigs always make my heart melt. May your beautiful girl have many more days of pea flakes and love 🧡
