My almost 2 year old Jasper was ill a couple of weeks ago with gut stasis, it was a Sunday night and I stayed up syringing critical care every 3 or so hours. The next day, I brought him to vet who happens to be an expert with exotic animals (I’ve just changed my vet as my Zeb died in April and I was not happy with his care and I’ve been going there for over 10 years) I researched other vets and found a one with this vet quite local with a good reputation and they had just employed a small animal expert. Anyway, he was given a strong dose of methadone some fluids, I continued critical care but by the next day he was back to his normal self, eating drinking, begging for treats etc. I’ve been watching his weight and it’s going down so quick despite his amazing appetite.
Had him back to the vet yesterday, was advised to give metacam twice a day and supplement him once a day with critical care. He’ll take about 3-4mls from me with no problem and then he gets very stressed. I heard baby purées can be given but I’d like to get advice first.
He’s going back this Monday, vet said if not improving will do head X-ray to check teeth. I’ve only 1ml syringes so I can only give him a bit at a time. I tried it in a bowl for him but no chance. Any advice to potentially make it is easier for both of us. He’s had enough after about 8ml

If his weight is going down then once a day critical care won’t be enough. He needs enough to stop the weight loss and replace his reduced hay intake. About 8ml per sitting is fine, it just means that the less you get in at each sitting, the more sittings you need to do to aim for at least 40-60ml per day. A 1ml syringe is the recommended syringe size to use when syringe feeeding so you can’t risk pushing too much in in one go and risking aspiration.
It’s ok to mix a small amount of veg purée in to change the taste of the critical care but he needs the fibre from the critical care so you can’t allow it to be too much veg.
The other thing is to try mixing mushed pellets in or trying a different type of recovery feed.
