Is it possible to grow grass for piggies? What grass is best, and how? I think it would be a safer and a more reliable way than just picking it from outside. :D

I grew some for mine this summer! It took a few months to get growing properly and its not rooted down that far so its kinda flimsy. I grew it in my old Quail aviary outside, and my boys loved running through the long grass! I just used regular grass seed from Tesco.

Normal multi purpose grass seed is fine. I sow it in seed trays but found this year the mice outside ate them all! But for the few minutes it takes to get devoured it it doesn't seem worth the time to grow it, so I pick grass or put them on the lawn.

I grow grass in seed trays in the winter IMG_6650.webp in the greenhouse and on the kitchen window ledge. Helps brighten up those long dark winter days when they are missing lawn time in the run. I just use multi purpose grass seed from Wilco.

I have no outside space and really like the idea of sowing some seeds indoors in seed trays. Will give it a go!

I'm jumping in here too ... sorry..... to all those who have success in growing .... can you send a step by step guide. I'm trying to grow wheatgrass at the moment, got it from zooplus in ready made trays but I'm slowly going through it with no results yet. first batch filled the tray as given ... it also has wheat and barley in too.. though there does seem a lot of non descript bits in that prob are not seeds but bulked up the bag! says moderate water which I did but it started to grow then went an awful smelly mess assumed I watered too much and with no holes in the tray it went mouldy
I'm on tray two and three now ..... but no shoots yet. good job my piggies are not totally reliant on my green finger skills

Sounds like it got too wet, although I'm not surprised if there was no drainage in the trays. When you do it again let the compost dry out before re-watering and use trays with drainage holes. I do a cut with scissors and let it regrow before gving to piggies, that strengthens the roots so they don't just pull it all out of the soil.

the wheatgrass kit I got was for non soil growing, but I did think myself that maybe try it with soil will halp keep the seeds moist but not too wet as it smelt awful ..... are they ok to plant now even though there are no shoots showing yet ?

I don't know how you grow grass if you don't use soil? I put compost in a tray and sprinkle grass seeds over the compost, then sprinkle a couple of mm of compost over the top water lightly and put in a warm dry place, either the greenhouse or on the kitchen window ledge. Water when top of compost looks dry approx. every 2 or 3 days. I use general purpose lawn seed from Wilko. I also use it on bald patches on the lawn in the spring and autumn and keep the piggies off those bits until it's well established.

I think wheatgrass and barley etc can be like cress where they just grow without soil. But it didn't work for me so trying another method. Don't want to waste the money I've paid and get no food at all

Normal multi purpose grass seed is fine
Normal multipurpose grass seed contains a significant proportion of perennial ryegrass seed (Lolium perenne). This is an important point because it's a species which is very high in calcium - this is what Readigrass is made from. So the same feeding restrictions for adults should apply to the grass in the fresh form as the dried. You can get lawn mixtures without it, but it'll be specifically labelled this way i.e. not bog standard.

If you have a piggy who has or is at risk from diabetes it's also worth bearing in mind that short grass has a much higher sugar content than longer grass.
