Hiya, I'm not necessarily a wannabe owner as I have 3 boars already but two have had to be separated. I got 3 adorable boys when they were babies and all got along perfectly fine, however as they've gotten older and fought for dominance one has had to be seperated from the rest for his own safety.

I know it's not a good idea to have a guinea pig alone and would obviously love to get a girl for him - at least then I know he can't be picked on by an alpha male pig. My only problem is that he is not neutered and I don't like the idea of doing that to him as he's been through enough already. If I was to find a spayed sow for him what is the chance that they would get along?

Chances of him getting along with a spayed sow are reasonably high, however chances of finding a spayed sow are sadly very low.

However it is wonderful that you are thinking of a companion for you boy - he is still young, and will be happier with a friend.
Depending on where in the UK you are located there are several reputable rescues that actually offer boar dating, so he can go along and they will let him choose his own friend.

A spayed sow is an option but piggies, like people, don’t necessarily get on.

They may be able to offer a dating service to ensure the piggies like each other.

I’m not an expert but I don’t think that spayed sows are as common and if you have a very good exotic vet a boar neuter is a good op. Of course there are risks with all surgery.
Hope you find a good solution

Spayed sows are as rare as hen’s teeth in rescue. You really are much better off to neuter your boy. In the hands of an experienced vet the procedure is quick and relatively safe. If you use the vet locator you will find experienced vets recommended by our members. Or ask your nearest rescue as the chances are they will be neutering several boars a year.

Thanks for your response, he's roughly 8 months old now so yea I'd like to get him a buddy for life. Unfortunately I've searched all the rescues I can in my area and they either don't have sows or don't have guinea pigs at all

Spayed sows are usually rare as spaying a sow is a very risky surgery. Your best bet would be to neatur your boar and find a sow for him. If you arent already please be aware that after boars are neatured they have to be seperated for 6 weeks to prevent any babies. After the 6 week wait period you can try to bond him with a sow. Your last resort would be to get him a sow from a pet store. If you get him a sow from a pet store please double check its gender and examine it to make sure it is not already pregnant. (A pear shaped sow is a pregnant sow)

I've seen this a few times, it seems like it might be my only option as I know he won't find a boar friend

Thanks so much for this information, I'll definitely have a look at this and think about neutering my boar instead

Thank you, I'll look into it

Hi and welcome

Unfortunately, spayed sows are about as rare as gold dust in this country, but we have a number of good rescues that offer boar dating under expert supervision for boars of all ages to take mutual liking and character compatibility into account if you don't want to neuter. You will come home with a new mate only if acceptance (or, in the case of residential dating that is offered by some rescues, the full bonding) has happened.
The additional advantage of using one of our recommended rescues is that you will only rehome a healthy, fully quarantined and properly sexed piggy and that you have the backing of the rescue if you run into trouble with your boar bond or can no longer keep your adopted piggy.
In the link below are the vetted good standard rescues we can vouch for. Since anybody can call themselves a rescue or breeder in this country without licensing or welfare check-ups, we cannot guarantee for any others: Recommended Guinea Pig Rescues

Baby boar trios have sadly a fall-out rate of about 90% during the teenage months.

If you could add your county to your details, we may be able to help you with local recommendations as to which rescues are best for your purpose or whether you have got a good neutering vet within your reach; in which case neutering is an alternative to consider.
