because i think they can......

if I walk by their home wearing black, brown, blue or dark colours they don't move and wheek at me on the off chance i might give more veggies.

if I walk by in bright pink, bright aqua or any other bright colours then they can't run for cover quick enough.

I have actually tested this on the same day and gone upstairs and changed to see the reaction. So i'm convinced they can see colours very well.

What are your thoughts/experiences?

I read somehwere on a Peter Gurney website that they can see colour.

In my experience, whenever I painted my toenails red or bright pink Rodney would rumble and shake his hips at my feet lol! I'm sure he thought my foot was a female sometimes

Hum, I read somewhere that they like bright colours - we decorated the wall where we built our piggies pens bright orange rolleyes

I remember when I lived at home my Dad had decorated my room from a purple wall paper to a reddish colour and Treacle kept staring at it when we put his cage back next to the wall, he looked as if to say well thats different, we were laughing cause he was staring at it for ages.

I think they must - isn't that the reason cages are usually brightly coloured these days? I believe the thinking is that pigs enjoy colours and giving them this visual stimulation helps prevent boredom.

i can definately confirm that my piggies know pale green and dark green, orange, red, beige (straw type beige) and very dark brown. :))

How interesting. I am sure they can see colour although I have never noticed mine acting any different.

funny replies! :))

maybe its because i wear dark colours so often that when I appear in shocking pink they have a panic. @)

must wear more bright colours so they can get used to it and maybe enjoy it!

I've never thought about it but all I've ever known is they have poor eye-sight, never read, heard or discussed even, about colour vision... I guess colour would be important but then smell, hearing and touch are used much more, so would their eyes be under-developed because of other senses being more advanced?

It'd be very interesting for us all to test it out on our pigs with coloured clothes and dull/dark clothes and come back with results on how they react.. may try this tomorrow!

Has made me think about how mine must see their homes as well... I'm going to think about how to liven my pig's hutches up because I've just begun feeling very guilty, especially if what people are saying is true, they may be able to see colour and to be perfectly honest all mine see is brown walls... :(

When I cleaned out the top level of my cage on Friday I decided to stick some butterfly stickers on the white correx 'wall' at the back of the cage. I was amazed at how, when the piggies went onto that level, they all stopped and had a look at, and sniff at, the butterflies...
It was funny to watch - they definately saw a difference

He's just complimenting your nail polish! :))

Geez, Skitty used to practically hump my feet if i had red nail varnish on, i thought it was just me! =') daft sod would sit there rumbling, strutting, cuddling and licking my toes, all he needed was a bit of Barry White and i'm sure he would have tried it on!

On the cardboard pigloo I recently made I used hot pink duct tape and regular old brown masking tape. Redemption kept going straight for the pink tape and pulling it off.

Also, this guinea pig magazine I am currently reading (I'm too tired to go get it, look up the quote, and post it right now) says that guinea pig eyes have two kinds of color cones in their eyes (humans have three). So I would say that yes, they can see color, maybe just not the same as we see.

Guinea pigs can seperate colours, but can't really see them. They see grey-scale but are able to indentify colours. Say if they always have a green foodbowl, and you suddenly replace it with a pink one, they'll be wondering what happend to their bowl, since the pink one is clearly a diffrent one.
