One of my girls has an extremely sweet tooth - like she'd drink a whole bottle of strewberrie calpol is she could kind of sweet

Anyway, my mom ordered some pomegranate juice with the shopping this week and I was wondering if it was safe to give her some as just a treat?

Guinea pigs shouldn't drink fruit juices and fruit should be limited to once a week or less x

She doesn't have fruit juice often. She sometime has cranberry juice as she's prone to calcium problems (and yes she's on a low calcium diet anyway) and she loves the taste of it. I was just wondering if it was going to kill her if she has it as a one of treat.

Don't think it will kill her

Once a week or less? Surely that's not right. I give mine a small piece of fruit every day.

I think it depends more on the quintey. For example, when my one girl is suffering with sludge she has 2ml of diluted cranberry everyday until it clears up - and it clears up far more quickly with the cranberry juice than without it!

I think as long as it's not a huge amount it's okay. One of my boys was nutty for apples. He was really timid so I use to use small slices of apple (when I say small I mean smaller than a finger nail) as treats for when he came up to me. He lasted till the ripe old age of 8 years so it couldn't have done him that much bad!

Personally, I think everything in moderation is fine.

You will see many differences of opinion about giving fruit to guinea pigs. The fact of the matter is that fruits ( and some veg e.g. carrot / beetroot )
are high in sugar and are therefore fattening. Also , they are not the sorts of foods guinea pigs would be eating in their natural environment.

Personally , I would be advising to limit fruit to a maximum of twice a week. I would only give fruit juice is there was a justifiable medical reason to do so.

Saying that, there is no text book answer to this - but we seem to be in agreement that too much fruit us bad for guinea pigs .

The best treat to give guinea pigs is a different variety of hay.

@PiggyOwner I know the other thread says twice a week but it also says:
'Please include one high vitamin C veg, herb or fruit into your daily mix as guinea pigs cannot produce their own. Ideally you feed fresh foods in chunks, slices, strips or sprigs.'

I'm comfortable I'm not overdoing the fruit. They're only getting small pieces, not the whole fruit. What's left is for me :D
