I am looking at a second hand really nice solid out door cage for the piggies for summer which I saw advertised but it said not to be used by rabbits that are not vaccinated because their rabbits died of the second strain of rabbit calicivirus.

Is this a risk to my piggies at all, I could get some bleach and spray it all over and wash it well before they use it, just to be on the safe side. It is made of metal so it should be cleanable.
What do you think?

Rabbit calicivirus - Rabbit Viral Haemorragic Disease, is a rabbit illness. it can live in the environment and will infect any unvaccinated rabbits hence the warning on the cage advert. It doesn’t affect rodents. There are other illnesses which can pass from rabbits to piggies (I have Rabbits as well as piggies and am obsessive about ensuring they are never near the rabbits or their equipment) though but if you can ensure the cage is thoroughly cleaned and bleached, and being metal hopefully this can be done properly. if in any doubt or if you have concerns that the cage can’t be cleaned properly, then it’s best to not get the cage.

Thanks for that, If I decide to get it, I will clean it inch by inch with a spray bottle of bleach.

I was also thinking about possibly putting my rescue hedgehog into it until I released him. Wasn't sure if I should use it for the pigs or the hedgehogs. Do hogs get Calcivirus, do you know? I've not heard of it.

Definitely give it a really good clean, but no, it is a rabbit disease so the hedgehog should be fine.

its a horrible disease though. it lives for so long in the environment that a rabbit doesn’t even need to have direct contact with an infected rabbit to catch it

You can find a list of things that rabbits can transmit to guinea pigs in this guide here: Guinea Pigs And Rabbits - Why Not

Best do a very thorough deep clean with a vet grade disinfectant when using a second-hand rabbit hutch.
