Hi all,
Iv had my guinea pig winston for a few months now and when i was taking him his veg he was running to the corner of his cage looking up with his mouth slightly open and i thought he was wheeking like my others do. Because i was bonding him lately with another pig i moved him into my bedroom so i could kep an eye on things and iv realised when hes doing this no sound is coming out! Because he looked like he was wheeking i just assumed he was but with 7 other pigs in the room wheeking i never realised before that no sound was coming from him. Its like hes trying to make noise but cant. Can guinea pigs be mute?

I'm not sure whether they can be but maybe he's just a quiet piggy? Maybe he can wheek if he wants to but doesn't want to?

Not sure about being mute but Lennie lost his wheek a while back for a short time and I put it down to having got different hay when I ran out. It was so dusty! He got his wheek back when I got my usual hay. Probably not the same thing, but possibly allergic to his bedding or just a very quiet piggy? :-\

Not all my piggies wheek or rather i've not heard them all wheek, not sure if a piggy can be mute :-\

Aw bless him :smitten: i hope he's ok! My Ralfie has lost his wheek but he's had a URI and it just sounds like a whisper when it comes out, its not completely silent x

Yes they can become mute if their vocal chords are damaged. I'm not sure if they can be born mute but I would assume as a living creature with vocal chords, it could be possible. Up until recently I thought Sooty had become mute after a minor operation to remove an abcess from his throat, but I just discovered he can squeak normally but he's completely lost his "big squeak".
