I seem to have a very dominent male (Alan) who won't accept my young boar (Monty) now he's hit puberty. They had a bloody fight and I've seperated them. So their living situation is that one is in the cage for half the time whilst the other one is 'free range' in my living room, then I swap them round. So both of them get 12 hours a day to run around my living room (which is very big so they can do good zoomies) They talk to each other, popcorn together and Alan rumble struts round the cage when Monty is in it. They seem happy enough but I wondered if you guys think this living situation is ok? Any advice?

I think they seem quite happy the way you have it all organised and its a good idea. love the way you allowed them on your living room floor for 12 hours which is really really really good. As long if there is no access to cables or dangerous thing for them to nibble on i think its fine. Maybe in the future you can try to bond them (after a few years)

:D Why not build two adjacent C and C cages so that they can both have space to run, side by side, all day?
Pro's: Two happy boars, No chances of wee-ing on the floor or chewing dangerous wires, no getting trapped in awkward corners, no having to switch them about every day. :tu:
Con's: two cages to clean.

Thanks for the advice. Don't worry there are no wires (I learnt that lesson a long time ago after my internet stopped working and called the engineer out only to discover guinea pig teeth marks in the wire!), nothing to chew and I've cut off any little nooks and crannies. Eventually I would like to get c&c cages for them but I can't afford it at the moment. They get plenty of exercise - as do I when I'm chasing them round the living room to try to catch them at swap over time! They are clever little blighters I swear they enjoy the chase!

My piggies live in a pet shop cage for rabbits and chinchillas... I know it is too small so I ALWAYS let them run around the floor for most of the day. I also cant afford C&C cages and would love to get one but my parents will probably think that a pet store cage is just fine.... Its really good to have your piggies out of the cage with free roam and to explore things everyday. Maybe you can put them both out and see what its like and how they react because its a bigger area for them to run and popcorn. If any signs of starting fights separate them. If they seem to get along again, try it every few days to see if they can bond

i had to separate boys when they hit puberty, and wouldn't go back together. they lived side-by-side and seemed to interact a fair bit through the bars. I wish they had gotten along as it's a shame that they couldn't be happy together. unfortunately one passed away and now I'm getting the other one neutered as he just wont settle with any boars!
