Hi

Does anyone use fleece bedding for their long haired guinea pigs?

My two boys will be coming inside for the winter to live in a C&C cage (if B&Q ever get any cubes in!).

I know the majority of people use fleece to line their cages but to be honest I am not convinced!

My boys have fleece cosies in their hutch and they get absolutely covered in fur. I remove as much as possible with a rubber glove but have to handwash them as the fur clogs the machine and covers everything I then wash in hair! Plus they get really stinky even though I wash them regularly.

I certainly don't fancy handwashing a big pile of smelly fleece!

Would I be better off sticking to using newspaper and ecopet bed (chopped cardboard) as usual?

Hi, I have 2 long haired out of my four and find that I don't have any issues with their hair on fleece, one of my short haired is the worst!

I have a pair which consists of a lunkarya and a coronet and they're fine, I personally think fleece is better because the sawdust isnt getting caught up in their hair. My other two comprise of a short haired and a rex cross, they're definately worse but I don't have any issues washing their cosy cups or fleeces. :)

My opinion is that the normal bedding doesnt collect the hairs, so when they sit in the cosey cup, it all rubs off! (I had this problem before fully converting)

I also find that as you have to shake out the fleece liner, more hair flies off then.

Both my boys are long haired but i dont find it too much of a problem.

Thanks

I could try fleece and see how I go. Mine are peruvian x sheltie and shed a phenomenol amount of hair - even after being brushed!

Cleaning guinea hair out the washing machine drum is not a fun job :))

Had no problems with them on newspaper and eco pet bed but looking for something that wont cause as much mess when they are inside.

I was always being moaned at by mum for hairs in washing machine, I bought one of these to wash piggy carpets in problem solved.

wow thanks :)

The pet bed wash bag is a fab idea - will definitely invest in one to wash the boys beds in

Hi use fleece for my sheltie and coronet, and I have had a couple of problems, though nothing serious.
I will see my sheltie's white hair all over the fleece, but only in small little pieces. It doesn't bother me, but it might bother you if you're a neat-freak.
Apart from that, fleece is lovely, give it a go rolleyes

Thanks for all your replies. I'm not a neat freak but if my piggies are going to be inside I want it to be as clean and fuss free as possible.

I have got some old towels and fleece blankets so might give it a whirl, I know fleece isn't always for everyone

I have three coronets and two longhair crosses. In my experience, there are a lot less tangles and stuff ending up in boar bits with living on fleece, as long as you also provide a generous hay corner.

It might be worth paying more for polar or microfleece, as hair and hay don't stick to them as badly. All fleeces need a good shake out before washing, if necessay, being washed in a duvet cover to prevent hair and debris messing up the machine if you have to share. Make sure that you never overfill the machine, or yuour fleece with come out stinking! And of course, no softener - it seals the surface.

Thank you Wiebke.

I have no problems with them on newspaper and ecopet bed and their fur never gets anything stuck in it, I was just thinking fleece would be easier than cardboard squares when they come in for the winter.

It doesn't matter if the cardboard & hay goes everywhere while they are outside but I don't want my little girls room to look like a farmyard when they come in for the winter :))

Thanks Poppys mum

B&Q are useless, I have been told I can go into my local store and order them, even though they are out of stock online but when I rang my local store they didn't have a clue what I was talking about!

Think I'll just fork out the extra money and get some off of ebay unless I can get some sense out of anyone at B&Q - doubt it

If they know they are so popular why don't they order more :{
