Calcified bulla syndrome

My Brillo has it he is 6 years old but he only got it when he was 4 after a bad respiratory illness. I think life span would depend on age when they catch it, severity of the condition and the speed of degeneration of piggy would be down to the individual.
I'm sorry your Stripe has this.

Brillo had an ear infection with his respiratory infection. The calcified bulla showed up on an xray which was done to look at his lungs and his arthritis, the vet wasn't actually looking for it. ABs got rid of the infection but he was left deaf which has improved a bit, his sight deteriorated too but he can still see enough to get around his cage without bumping into things if I put them back in a different place.

My Stripe is going to be on antibiotics for another month. The vet said possibly going to a specialist surgeon to puncture holes in the bulla.

That's interesting, I've not heard of that. Let us know how you get on.
Brillo had 2 months of Baytril to clear the pneumonia, it got rid of the ear infection at some point during that time. He has multiple health problems including a suspected tumour. He is too frail for sedation to investigate further but he is doing well for a piggy who has been on palliative care for 2 years!

Is Brillo off the antibiotics then? Before he had the tumor, did you use any meds for the CBS?

Yes Brillo is off the ABs there is no longer any infection just the bone overgrowth in his skull and ears which they can't do anything about. We don't know what came first the tumour or the CBS both were found when he was xrayed for arthritis and pneumonia. He is on Metacam for life mainly due to the arthritis but it will help with any other pain he has. To be honest the CBS doesn't seem to affect him very much other than he can't hear that well but he never misses a bag rustle! His poorer eye sight could be down to old age anyway.

Poor Stripe, why would they want to puncture holes in it? Would that not spread any infection?

I'm not sure. My vet is learning, too. She just mentioned perhaps doing a surgery at a specialist.

But she texted me last night and said we were going to try antibiotics and pain management. I'm hoping not to do the surgery.

He's still eating, popcorning, and loving his wheatgrass. He's on critical care, too, but has gained 25 grams.

Praying that no matter how long he lives it's a happy life.

It is probably better that they don't do that surgery any more, it sounds horrible. The Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue have guinea pigs with CBS and lots of knowledge about it. If you search You Tube using "Saskia Guinea Pig" their videos come up. You might already know them. Perhaps with the good care he gets, Stripe will live a good normal length life ❤️
