As some of you are aware I am soon to receive 4 new sows to add to my exsisting sow. I am looking into larger cages and wondered what are opinions on cages with ramps. Are they dangerous ie. falling risk?

Many thanks for forthcomming opinions.

Some piggies use them and some dont. I have 3 that are used to using a ramp and 7 that wont go near one. You can teach them to use one by placing treats on it, the problem I have found is that they are ok going up but less happy to go down. Think its Ryli on here that has a tunnel on the ramp which makes piggies feel safer :)

Most piggies don't like going downhill very much. Ryli's tunnel seems to have worked for her - and treats. But be prepared that not all of your piggies will want to use it.

Iv used ferplast corner shelves and ramps in indoor cages with all of my piggies and they have all managed without any trouble but iv not got a wooden hutch with a ramp. Iv **** got the wrong end of the stick :))

My two guinea pigs recently changed to a hutch with a ramp under it, they didnt seem to like it at first, but now they just bob up and down no problems, but I never thought of making it into a tunnel, it sounds like a good idea and a lot more fun for them too!

my piggies hate ramps they are scary things!rolleyesrolleyes

it can take them a while to get used to it but it shouldn't be a problem for them, guinea pigs are pretty agile and don't find climbing difficult to an extent.

I've had a few cage designs with ramps and had a few types of ramp too. Having a side on the ramp will discourage any "adventurous" types from taking a flying leap. Make sure the angle is no more than 45 degrees - any steeper and it'll be more of a trek than a minor workout to get the the upper level! The surface needs to be covered and protected with something enough for the pigs to grip without the risk of hurting their feet.
