Hi all

I'm new to the forum but we've had our pigs for about a year now. We're looking at rearranging the living room, where they live and the best place is now next to a radiator. I know from a quick read online this isn't ideal but does anyone know if leaving a gap between the radiator and the cage will mean it is ok? Could I also cover the radiator to try and diffuse the heat perhaps? We will just not rearrange if it's really not a good idea but if there is a way to make it work I'd be grateful to hear it! Thanks in advance

about 2feet away would be ideal, any closser and they may get to hot

personaly l wouldent cover the radiators

Hello and :wel: to the forum,

Personally I do not think it is a good idea for them to be near a radiator unless of course you plan on just leaving it turned off (if you can do that).

Guinea pigs (like rabbits) cannot pant and so are unable to cool themselves down and unfortunately they are very susceptible to heat stroke.

If this was to happen due to the heat from the radiator and it was not acted on immediately when the symptoms appear it can be fatal so the need to seek veterinary treatment would be needed as a matter of urgency. If you happened to be out at the time then it would possibly be fatal for your piggy.

I think it is great that you are obviously such a caring owner to seek advice from others first before making any changes.

Do you have thermostatic values on the radiator? They are the larger ones that are normally numbered 0-5. If so you can turn the radiator off, it's usually a symbol before the number 0. Of course this may not make the living space as comfortable for the humans if you just have the one radiator

Welcome to the forum! Lovely to have you here. Can't add to the great advice received above but wanted to say Hi and welcome. Be lovely to see some photos of your piggies and hear all about them.

Just read this and our c&c cage is next to a radiator........ should i move them a good bit away from it ? Heating is never really above 18 and i thought it would keep them warm at night ......

My cage is next to a radiator, but we don't have it on a lot and our flat is usually cold so when we do have it on the pigs often purposefully move towards it as it's lovely and warm for them near it! They have the best spot in the house because the rest of it is usually freezing. We also never have it on if we are not in the room with them, apart from when we went away but then we left it on a lower setting and it was timed not to stay on for more than 2hrs at a time. I think as long as you are around to monitor your piggies and gage how hot it is for them in the cage it should be ok, but really it just depends how hot it is.

i have moved them away slightly and turned the radiator down a bit.... i have never felt the heat when i clean them out unless its been a really cold day... they have a fleece house and cosy to snuggle in ...
