Hello I'm new here and am looking for some advice please.
My Guinea pig sonic is a 18 month old male. We bought him and his brother from a farm park when they were about 6 months old.
Unfortunatly his Brother died around 6 months ago now and sonic has been on his own ever since.
He does seem a lot happier on his own, since his brother was quite dominant and poor sonic was always the last in line for food etc taking what scraps his brother left.
He has been living quite happily in his cage since, but we are getting him a much larger home and i was wondering would he benefit from having a cage mate? Obviously another male as we dont want a breeding pair, I was reading that Guinea pigs should be kept in pairs but am worried that with his quiet nature he would be either bullied or turn nasty? I also read that its very rare for a solitary pig to be happy, but he seems ok?
Any advice on whether he needs a new friend would be greatly appreciated

There is always exceptions to piggies living on there own but I would at least try with another boar. A lot of rescues do boar dating where you could take your little guy and try to bond him with another boy.

x.

Thanks for the reply, I am struggling to find many rescues around the worsko / retford area to be honest
I came across the Thornberry Animal sanctuary http://www.thornberry-animal-sanctuary.org/contact2.php
has anyone had any experience with these before?
I really want to try and get him a friend who has the same sort of temprement he does, and with the cage I have ordered being over 2 meters long and 1 meter high I think he will get a little lost in there on his lonesome lol

Hi, I'm from Doncaster, I help out with 2 rescues and Boar date piggies.

Infact I heard Thornberry was closing? And they dont have anyone who does boar dating as I found out from a lady when I boar dated her piggie she got him from Thornberry he was living with rabbits and the lady was told the piggie couldn't live with another because he's a boy - well we proved that wrong as I bonded another male up with him successfully.

I foster Guinea Pigs from Barnsley Animal Rescue, but we don't have any single Boars in at the minute.
I also help out at CavyCorner in Doncaster. http://www.cavycorner.org/index.html
Maybe you could e-mail Sue and ask her if she thinks she has anyone suitable for your piggie to go boar dating with?
Sue has about 150 piggies, some are Sanctuary piggies and have a forever home at the Sanctuary and some are there to be rehomed to the deserving new owner ;)

Let me know how things work out, and if you need anymore help give me a shout.

I would definitely go along with eveyone else and get another boar. Even if they can't actually live together in the same cage (which I hope they will be able to do!) they can live next door to each other in separate cages. This is still more enriching and provides a better quality of life for a piggy.

Our two boars used to live together but had to be separated and are now neighbours. If I have to take one to see the vet, the other will be sad until he gets back. They need to know the other one is there and is ok, they just can't stand to be close to each other.

Piggies are very vocal and communicative and they really need to have other piggies around to talk to.

Best of luck and I really hope you can find a nice rescue boar and provide a really happy home :)

Good morning all and thanks again for all the replies :)
I have made the decision to try and find a friend for sonic and have been on the look out ever since ( well since last night haha) so not much found at the moment.
Thanks for your reply salt and peppers, I will email sue some time today :)
We are just awaiting the arrivial of his new home and there will be a few adjustments to be made to it before I get around to getting another piggie as I want to introuduce them both to the new cage at the same time so sonic doesnt think the new friend is intruding etc.
My sonic really is such a lovely boy tho, But I am biased haha!
He is currently in love with my daughter and spends his whole cuddle time licking her nose haha! sooo cute Will have to add some piccies of him soon.

I see you're in Worksop and I know it's not that close, but you might try Small Paws rescue up here in Manchester. Becklen resuce (on facebook too) might be able to sort out at piggy train to get one to you also.

Oooh thanks for that hun, it is quite a way away to be honest BUT am willing to travel when we have the time so will certainly keep it in mind.
