my son bought the school guinea pigs home to look after over the weekend and I am slightly concerned about the size of the cage they live in.there are 3 full grown females in a cage which measures 18" x 29.5". It has a covered sleeping area at one end but nothing else..I feel its far too small for them and they seem to squabble a lot..what do others think ? does it seem cruel for them to be in there?

That's far too small. :(

I think the recommended size for 3 guinea pigs is closer to 30 inches by 60 inches. No wonder they are squabbling.

I don't really approve of pets being kept by schools at all. I think there are very grey areas when it comes to who is responsible when they are ill or require additional care, as well as the constantly changing and noisy environment.

They live in this cage at school, they do go out in a run if the weather is nice but each weekend they are taken home by a pupil so spend all their time in there.I have put them out in our run as much as possible over this weekend.I think i am going to speak to the class teacher tomorrow and say the cage is to small for all of them. Thanks for your help.

Maybe you could talk to the children about guinea pig care? They could have a class fundraiser for a good size cage, that is if there is room for a cage of the size needed? xx

Great idea! My only concern would be that they wouldn't go for it because trasporting a cage that big to someones house would be difficult. My Trixie 150cm cages are maaaassive! But then, it should be brought to their attention that if they can't provide the space needed, they shouldn't be keeping them.
