During a discussion on horse bedding at an equine course last night, I was interested to hear about rubber matting that although expensive, lasts for months and seems to be great for using in stables, doesn't smell and mess only needs a sweep/shovel up. It can be used with or without straw. Has anyone used this for their guinea pig hutches or perhaps for their horse and could explain a bit more? The tutor thought it would probably work. I have looked at prices for this stuff on the internet- it does vary with thickness and might not be viable. Anyone any thoughts?

I know the type you mean but my personal opinion is that it is probably overkill for hutches. A sheet of plastic, a piece of Lino, a wipe clean table cloth is just as good, much cheaper and just as long lasting. I line my hutches with an old wipe clean table cloth, then newspaper, sometimes shavings and then a thick layer of hay. I’d also question how easy it would be for piggies to be able to get their teeth into rubber matting
(Of course, straw should never be used with guinea pigs)
