I use it as an essential - I disinfect their cages when I clean them out so every 2-3 days.. If i didnt disinfect the cages would pong slightly! Peeew!

I get a good one from Asda - About £1.50 i think... So i dont mind having to buy quite alot of it!

I think is where I'm going wrong, I'm a Tesco girl :) I might go have a look as there's one near us. £1.50 is a pretty decent price. The ones I've found elsewhere are £4-£6.

I've been using star drops antibacterial apple scented spray. It foams up as you scrub and gets rid of everything!

I use it,
Mine works out about 30p a bottle as I buy a 1 litre bottle of Trigene and it has a 1ml of trigene to 100ml of water ratio.

I also use Trigene. The dilution ratio is great and its the only disinfectant to ot make me all wheezy! :)

I use F10. Works for everything......my dogs, parrot, snakes, lizards & torties as well as my guinea pigs! I also keep a supply of Hibiscrub if I fancy a nicer smell!

I'm glad you mentioned hibiscrub, I have loads and forgot about it. I can use it for cleaning out pogle post neuturing DOH

I used to use disinfectant once a month with hammies to build their immunity but since i got piggies it's an essential as they live outside and i want to get any smells out bugs may like.
I pay £10 for 200ml of trigene and it's diluted 1:100 with water so it lasts FOREVER so not expensive.
If you don't want to buy any just mix baking soda, lemon juice and white (preferably) vinegar, i do when i run out of disinfectant and it does the trick

Essential or waste of money?

Yes and no. An anti-bacterial spray or disinefectant is definitely essential for a thorough clean of you cage (I do this once a week cleaning the cage bottom in the shower).

A specific "animal" cage disinfectant like they have in some pet shops, I think, is a waste of money. I just use the own brand stuff that I use for everything else around the house.

I use Johnsons Small Animal Disinfectant. It's fairly cheap and the smell isn't overpowering like some I've tried in the past. My lot are on fleece though, so it's used to just wipe the base over between clean-outs.

Same one as I use I think!

you i use vinegar for my pig to its cheap and it works very well!:(|)

polishes up plastic, metal and glass lovely when buffed with newspaper too ... once a month when I do the daft metal work in the bathroom, polish the mirros etc my entire house smells like a chippy ;)) great stuff! My mum bought me a book one year 1001 uses of vinegar! Can you tell I love teh stuff?

F10 here :))
Lasts ages with the dilution ration, good spray in the pens every time the piggies are cleaned out and a quick spritz and wipe inbetween if needed :))

I use the one from Wilkinsons at £2.49 a bottle.....it smells lovely and it last ages and I use it everyday :(|)

I use this one too & white vinegar as well :)

Personally I would always use a proper animal friendly disinfectant; F10, Johnsons, Wilkinsons etc. They aren't a waste of money as you know they are safe if used correctly. Normal household cleaners could be very dangerous for piggies especially if it's bleach etc :...
