My two new girlies (sadly lost my two boars recently - unrelated deaths but both quick and unexpected :...) are currently living in a Ferplast 140 cage.

I know it's a good cage, and it's fine. But I'd really like to upgrade them at some future point to a 150cm cage as they are also bigger front-to-back so a fair bit bigger overall.

I've been looking at both the (( Liberta Retreat Cage )) and the (( Liberta Rabbit 150 Extra Large Cage )) - but am not sure which would be best? I've measured up and either will fit in the space allowed (just! :)).

I know both will need the shelf modding to make it piggy-safe.

The second cage seems more solidly built and more robust overall.

But the first one has a sliding tray and is already on a stand with castors. I'm wondering if a sliding tray would make cleaning easier than lifting a 150cm cage off its base every week..... I don't have great joints so I am thinking it may be better for my back......

I had the smaller version of the first cage at one point and it was a total pain to put together lol. So the idea of a normal cage that doesn't have to be put together does appeal!

I read somewhere that Jolleys sell the Rabbit 150 cage? We have one not too far from us so I guess the best thing would be to go there and have a proper look. But would love to hear from people that have either cage and how they found them.

Price-wise they are comparable as to get a stand for the second cage would make it about the same price as the first cage (Retreat) anyway.

I have both the 140 and the 150 cages and TBH there is very little extra floor space in the 150 as the sides of the base tapers in. I don't consider the expense of a 150, when you already have a 140, to be worth the few extra centimetres.

Perhaps adding an extra large platform (I cut 6mm plywood to fit the lip of the base) would give them a lovely large bedroom underneath and a place for the food and water above, they would get a lot of exercise using it as a kitchen.

I agree with suzy!

There is so much height in the ferplast 140 that you can easily add a level each side and a ramp using plywood or plastic grids or correx etc and still be able to climb in to clean the cage :D I had a level added in for a while and the boys loved it :D

Thank you both! Well that will save me some money lol. :))

They are quite shy still at the minute so am keeping the cage relatively open to get them used to us. But I will add a shelf, thanks for the advice.

Looking forward to getting them downstairs with us! The cage will be on boxes for a while lol. May get a stand but may well just get an Ikea Lack table for it to sit on! Cheaper and will give me a shelf too. Thanks both! :))

Id go for a table if you dont plan on moving the cage much :D the ferplast stand is ugly I have one but I move my pigs around all the time so the wheeeeeeels are puuuurfect :D

Thank you. I will get the table I think - the £20 one should do the job just fine.

The cage won't be moving about once it's in position, no. Husband was a welder (now retired - he's a fair bit older than me lol!) and he's very critical of metal products! When he was at work he made a fair few metal stands for various cages for me so he won't really approve of me buying a stand that I know will be very much inferior to the ones he made lol. Especially as it's quite expensive compared to the cost of the cage!

It will be going in the dining rooom so the piggies will be nearer to us (they are currently in a spare bedroom upstairs) although their play-pen will stay upstairs. I've bought a 4x4ft frame paddling pool from Argos for just £12.49 and it makes a brilliant playpen! :)) xx

Eventually they will get the 6x4 rabbit run upstairs for playtime but my rats and hamster currently share that! (not at the same time though! ;))

my 140 cm is on a 118 cm table from Ikea - the Lack table with the shelf underneath - I don't use the shelf and keep the stuff under the table in plastic boxes. The table is really wide so you can fit a lot of stuff under there!

I had the Trixie Rabbit 150 for my two piggies and I think it's a great shop-bought cage - probably the best IMO. I discarded the mezzanine level that comes with the cage as it's all wire with a pants ramp and I made my own hay loft with a nice, solid wooden ramp. It was a pain to clean out as you had to crawl in through the front trap door or take the whole top off. However, I overcame that problem by completely replacing the wired top with C&C mesh panels. The base of the Trixie 150 fits 4x2 grids perfectly! Problem solved - the cage now became an open top cage and I could just lean in to clean it all out.
