I wasn’t well last night so my husband gave the pigs their tea. They’re in a ferplast plaza 160 and hub has only just told me that he dropped the door and the bars smashed in to Edwards face 😞 He said he checked him over and apart from being a little shell shocked, he was ok but I’m worried about his teeth, will he be ok? Would I know by now if there was something wrong?

Hi

If Edward was seriously injured, there would have been blood from the mouth or nose, wobbly or broken teeth and congested breathing from a blocked nose.

If that is not the case and Edward is acting and eating perfectedly normally, then is at the most a little sore but he is not injured - and you need to worry; is is likely more the shock than anything that caused him to be shell-shocked.

Thank you for the reassurance. He’s fine and eating and drinking like normal. I just feel awful 😞

It's one of these things that happen to most of us sooner and later. I've certainly dropped stuff in my cages/ on my piggies when I unbalanced or something slipped through my fingers, like a snugglesafe pad... (thankfully no lasting harm done).

Please take a deep breath and give your worriting mind something more constructive to work on . :tu:

Sounds like just one of those things that happens and all is well. But I’ll bet your husband was a bit shaken, too. I’ve done it myself and the door being dropped makes one heck of a noise.

I’m pleased Edward seems ok today. Accidents happen. Hope you’re feeling better today.

Oh no. Please don’t be worrying or feeling bad, these things happen. Hope Edward is ok. He has most likely forgotten the whole thing by now, so be kind to yourself 😊

Sounds as if Edward is fine, possibly a little shaken.
Hope your husband wasn’t too shocked either.
Accidents do happen so don’t beat yourself up.
Hugs

please don’t worry too much Claire, exactly the same thing happened to Ginger the other week. This is the only complaint I have about the plaza 160 cage. I’d fed them their tea and knocked the opening by mistake putting the container in the top. Ginger looked slightly shocked as it crashed down, she was slapped on the nose but otherwise fine, I think I was more shocked thb x

Try not to worry Claire, if Edward is eating and acting normally there's no lasting damage.
It happened to us too a couple of times when we were using the Little Friends 160 cage. I'm sure it frightened the humans more than the piggies who soon recovered after food! We fastened the door up with a small bull dog clip after the second time so the door didn't fall down accidently.

What a great idea.

Great idea! Ginger was still following my hand with both feet up looking for more food, poor thing. felt so guilty!
Will find big bulldog click

I've just noticed that Edward has half a tooth missing :( He hasn't lost any weight and is eating as normal but I now feel really bad and so does my husband :( Will his tooth grow back ok?

If the root is damaged, probably not. If his tooth has just snapped he'll probably be ok. Keep an eye on the opposite tooth (,that it normally grinds against) as it may need trimming depending on how much tooth is missing. I'm sure Edward will be fine! Don't worry about it

If he has lost the end if it his tooth should grow back fine. The top might grow down/up a bit more but as the broken one grows and meet the opposing tooth will wear it even again
There is a good web page on Guineapiglynx website on broken tooth x

I've had more than one piggy that has lost a bit of tooth due to some sort of accident (ran into something or I don't know what they sometimes do to themselves). The teeth always grew back quickly. Sometimes they needed a little bit of help during the first days, but that's all.
If a tooth is cracked, that can be pretty nasty. But these kind of problems usually go hand in hand with a problem with the root.

When Zara had her tooth problem and couldn't eat the vet literally shaved 2 mm off the top of her dicky incisor. This was enough to stop it catching when she chewed with the back ones and she started eating again the same day. The plan was that the tooth would grow back and even up against the top ones as if it had broken. I'm pretty sure she did the damage herself by hurling herself at the bars with teeth bared to intimidate the neighbours!

Zara had lost weight steadily over the previous couple of months but so little at a time that you couldn't really tell week on week and she seemed to have no problems tackling any sort of food until, of course, she stopped biting me. Her problem appeared to be right down at the root and although the incisor felt firm it did have a weird lumpy coating that had grown up one side. If I'd spotted the weight loss a month earlier I'm still not sure what we would have done differently but if Edward starts to lose weight gently over time you'll have an idea that something might be amiss and at least know what to look for. But piggies are designed to cope with the odd broken tooth pretty well so I wouldn't worry - if it's snapped off further up and the root is still OK there's every chance it'll sort itself out x

View attachment 196778Thank you. I shall keep a close eye on his weight. This isn't Edward but is a picture from Guinea Lynx that @Bill & Ted directed me to. This is basically what Edward looks like but the tooth isn't broken right down to the gum x
I'm sure Edward will be just fine. You are probably more worried than he his. These little fluff balls can really make us worry can't they!

It's really good that he's maintaining his weight, shows he's getting enough so it can't be bothering him and he's able to munch away.

Teeth grow super fast so soon this will be a distant memory and you'd never think he'd had an issue. ☺️

Edward is still maintaining his weight so I assume he’s able to eat hay? I’ll feel much better when his tooth has grown back :(
Edwards tooth shouldn’t take too long, it looks worse before it look better, once all the teeth even themselves up and back to normal again. I checked Ginger’s, we were lucky, (I’ve had my bad luck with teeth) I think the cage caught her on the nose not her teeth
