I'm looking into making my guys a C&C cage. I'm not sure how successful it'll be since I can't seem to get anything to go in a straight line, but making it seems to be a lot cheaper than buying one (and I want to give them as much room as possible).

My questions are: would This 2mm Correx sheet be okay to begin with? It's a third of the price of the 4mm Correx I've looked at, and I'd feel far more comfortable practicing with that. I was planning on these cubes because it's the 9 square ones you are looking for, right?

And the final question is: My plans may be scuppered because, sadly, I'm limited in terms of where I can put the cage. My living room is basically very narrow and long, and in the roof (modern three storey house), so I can't really move my furniture around due to height and space restrictions. Where I can put the cage (and it really is the only place) would mean that some of it would be under the Velux window. I'm worried that it would be a little too much direct sunlight? It's well insulated so the area doesn't get cold in Winter or too hot in Summer, isn't drafty, there's at least five foot between the window and floor, it would be just a small strip of the cage directly under (the windows probably less than 50 cm wide), but I've heard never to put cages near windows, so now I'm worrying. Would it be okay?

Hello! The C&C cages are very easy to build, so I wouldn't worry too much. Not too sure about the correx. If you add a photo of the room, we may be able to help you configure it. You can also make L-shaped cages if needed. I wouldn't worry too much about the sun. How long would they be in direct sun?

I used proplex for the boys’ cage. It does the job but in one area has been chewed all off 🙄 patience is a virtue!

The grids are 35.5cm each so you could measure your area and see what you can fit there. An L shape would also work.

Do you have boys or girls?

I ended up just going for a 2x5 (the room is a tiny bit wider than the width of the cage). I tried an L-shape, but sadly didn't work. it didn't leave much space to walk around and the door kept hitting it. Having a slight confidence wobble and thinking that perhaps I should have gone for a pre-made one! I'm not sure if the ramp will be too steep (plans are to cover it in correx and fleece. I'm just not sure that correx would be stable enough of it's own).

2x5 is a good size. I’d say make the ramp longer, it does look a little steep. You could bend two grids and cover with correx/carpet. They need sides on them so they can’t fall of the edge.

If also say try and secure the base of the loft. Either by passing a piece of wood underneath or the (metal) bars that Grendle sells.

I was also going to try and make a ramp from grids/correx, but someone on her suggested guttering. It was so much easier, just glued some carpet tile to it. The angle shown on the photo below has been absolutely fine for ours, they fly up and down it!

I second the guttering. That’s what I previously used as a ramp in the boys’ cage. It’s a 2x5 but I think the ramp must have been about 15cm long or thereabouts. It left enough room to turn at the bottom
But no more. They used to jump off the side anyway 🤔

I have a bent 2 grid ramp, the loft is not a full grid height as I find full grids too steep. I have used wooden ramps and guttering in the past, this ramp was a tempory meassure until we sorted out something else to fit but it's working well so I will probably just leave it.

I’ve used the 2mm correx from Wickes and found it better than the 4mm I initially bought. Mine also have a strip where the sun comes in but I placed grids over the top and drape fleece over it as a shade, plus they like the darker bit to hide in.

Thanks! I used one of the spare panels to give stability to the loft. I'll have to look into the guttering (not sure how I'm going to fit it into the car!) As a temporary measure, I just used the remaining correx and folded it up, and then duct taped paper straws to the underside to make it more rigid (it's surprising what a difference it made!) It took the weight of my 3+kg Chihuahua. I've made it as long as the ones you see on the ready made c&c cages, so hopefully it works.

I'm so much happier with how much more space they now have. They didn't seem bothered by the change in surroundings and just tucked into their food. Just have to make them some new cage liners (the thought makes me want to cry. 😂 )

For now, I can finally tidy the room back up!

Looking good! You can get shorter lengths of guttering so it should fit in your car! I got mine from Wickes.

Thanks! I might stick with what I have for now as they've been happily going up and down the ramp all day. They're both up in the loft chomping on hay as I write this.

Think about putting a side on that ramp. Otherwise it looks very inviting 😁

It has a side! Just hasn't photographed very well! 😂 Probably will try and put a bigger one on.
