I have been an owner of my two, sweet female guinea pigs (Margo and Teddy Bear) for over 2 years now. When I first got them, I housed them in a 2 by 4 C&C cage which didn't work out well because my chloroplast was two different pieces. The cage ended up falling apart and the pigs had to be moved to a store bought hutch.

My problem is, I want to move them back inside into a proper and spacious cage but my parents are worried that the cage will just fall apart once more. I really do want them in a bigger c&C cage but they refuse to listen at this point. Would it be a bad idea to save up for the cage and put together myself? They can be kept in my own room and out of my parent's way.

In the end, these guinea pigs are mine. I pay for almost everything that they need so this is not a matter of my parents having authority over them. These are my pets and I really just need advice on how to do what's best for them. They need more room and my parents aren't seeing that.

Have you tried using cable ties? The connectors aren't the best.

Yes, I did have the zip ties. It wasn't the grids that came apart, it was the chloroplast.

If you can find thicker coroplast and only score about halfway through it should work. Duck tape/fabric tape would also keep it together. @madguinealady uses a different method of a waterproof layer on the bottom that isn't coroplast. Hopefully she can elaborate for me :)

yeah try and use one sheet of coroplast with no joins, tea crate packaging do large sheets really cheap, and score very carefully so you don't cut through (i use a hobby craft scapel but be careful) then once its folded i use a glue gun to glue the flaps outside round the edges and gaffa tape on the outside of the scores yo keep them secure and watertight.

the only thing id say is don't fall out with your parents over it bring them on the forum or on youtube to see how its done and get their help try and involve them in the creative side if your sad likes diy then use that to your advantage. the pigs may be yours but assuming your house belongs to your parents so just reassure them and respect that it may take some convincing

i have the plastic covered grids from ebay, vonhaus interlocking storage.I just use a shower curtain then incontinence pads then fleece. The cage goes over this so they cant dig.Have litter trays one end and they are covered. If you still have the correx you could do this then cable tie the correx sides to the outside of the grids.I cable tie all mine as is cheaper and sturdier and means i can lift the edges to move fleece.

Thanks so much! You all are extremely helpful. I have been trying very hard to respect my parents and have also been making a point to show them that I am responsible for my pets and will keep their space clean. I'll have to get my dad involved with my DIYing, he loves it:)

good luck let us know how you get on. I love the c&c cage because you can do so much with it, mine is 2 cages stacked with doors and lofts and stuff and there's so much more i want to do! Hope your dad loves it he can diy make ramps for you!

In engoand you can get giant bits of chloroplst from sign shops etc.. I have maged to get pieces big enough for 6x2 so hopefully you should be able to source a big enough piece.

My 2 cages a re made from cubes. One sits on a made to measure wooden base (thanks to OH) and the other sits on cardboard! Both are covered with puppy pads then fleece. Both bases sit on an oilcloth sheet. No coraplast in sight.
