So for a Xmas present my piggies will be getting a bigger cage (possibly sooner if they are good and I can presuade Santa to big their gift early). I was thinking about getting them a 2x2 loft and expanding to a 5x2 but is under a 2X2 loft hard to access for hiding pigs/cleaning? Any tips and thoughts would be most appreciated

(I was a little trigger happy with the post button. Apologies)

These are images of our current set up. Very standard and boring. As you can see 5 grid is probably as wide as we can get but there is a possibility to make the cage deeper instead. Any ideas of how to give my pigs as much space as possible (and probably more space efficient) would be most appreciated. Also is there any ideas of how to tidy up the pig storage underneath? Anyone know of perfectly sized storage cubes big enough for piggy fleece and hides?

(In unrelated news. I was so happy catching on of my pigs mid-popcorn in the foreground of the side view picture. She loves a freshly cleaned cage!)

I have just built a C&C cage that has a 5x2 area with a 2x2 loft. (also a 3x2 separate area for male baby pig)

Yes, it is quite hard, in fact impossible for me to reach the back under the loft., even with the entire 3x2 roof up.. I have quite long arms but nope, can't get to it. I am using litter trays under the loft and will pull these out then use a long handled brush to get to the back underneath. That's the plan but I onky just started using the cage today so I will let you know if it becomes a problem once I try to clean it! If so I may have to make the loft a 2x1 but I honestly don't think it will come to that. The extra space is worth the struggle :)

If plausible, we'll expand depth ways and make it a 3x4 but that might interfere with our walkways. But if 2x2 we easier to access we could give them more room upstairs and maybe even a half level too. I guess half levels suffer from the same access problems? Is there any supports you can buy without having to put poles in? As you can see my top level is a bit droopy. If we were to expand to 3x4 would a 1x3 loft need a post underneath? Or even a vertical grid? How on earth do you get Correx to fit around a vertical grid in the middle of you cage? Do you just attach it to the top and not the bottom and remove it at cleaning time?

Sorry I am full of questions today. XD

Having changed my c&c cage many times I have a few suggestions. A bigger loft is harder to clean under but I got round it by having a removable front. A vertical grid does work for support but makes it hard for piggies to zoom about and it a nightmare for cleaning. I have found adding a roof the the loft stabilises it or I found a support bar on eBay you could try. I'll take some pictures of the current set up for you later if you like.

Oo! Yes please! I will happily steal anyone's good ideas. lol!

To update on my 2x2 loft area, it is a pain to clean under and I am thinking now of having the front open some how just so I can reach the back corner, under the loft to make it easier! The loft floor seems well supported so I don't think I'll need any additional supports. Will let you know!

My boyfriend has literally (within the last half hour!) finished building the third iteration of our C&C cage. This one is the biggest and nicest one we've had (but it's also supporting a third more piggies that the first build!).

For our first cage set up my boyfriend really wanted a 'guinea pig bridge' so we actually has two loft areas! We had a 2x6 base, with a ramp to a 1x2 loft on the right side of the cage, which had a bridge over to an L-shaped piece on the left side. Why L-shaped? Because we had a 2x2 square and we found it far too much hassle to clean under and capture rogue piglets. So it became an L-shape, giving them a bit of extra upper floor space without being so irksome for us hoomans. The only downside is that an L-shaped loft and a 1x2 loft didn't add as much extra room as we would have liked (especially when we ended up with more piglets!)

Cage two; this might be a bit more difficult to describe, and, unfrotunately, I don't have any photos of that set up. The base was still 2x6 and we still had the two loft areas and bridge. One loft area was still 1x2. The other loft area was a 1x2 attached to a 2x2 that wasn't actually above the 2x6 base. It meant we only had to get under 1x2 lofts for cleaning/capturing, and the space under the 2x2 loft we used for storage of food, hay, etc.. It meant that the whole cage set up was an L-shape this time. I wasn't a huge fan of this set up though; I just didn't like how it looked and it was a bit 'all over the place' for my liking (don't think it helped that we got new fleeces and I didn't like the red as much as the purple), but it did give the piggies lots more room to play while being easy to get the hoover around. It also gave us storage, which made things 'neater', as we could tuck everying away!

So cage three. We've dispensed with the bridge (for now; there are potential plans to reinstate it at some point) and we have a 2x6 base with a 2x6 loft; they're staggered so you can still access both floors. The upper loft is supported at the back, which, again, means we have some storage space (this time hidden around the back of the cage) to tuck everything away in. I really like this set up, although we are going to change their ramp as the current one is too large (they have a spiral staircase; we just need to add a 'bannister' so they don't fall off and we're good to go!) As we've only had the set up, well, not even an hour, I can't really comment on it's practicality, but everywhere does seem really easily accessible and the piggies have LOADS of room to play (and more room for toys, so less crowded all round). The only problem with this set up is that it is HUGE. It is very much a feature in our living room now. =P I'll see if I can get some photos, if you're interested.

As you've already heard, a 2x2 loft is a pain in the bum to clean under. Our indoor setup is a 5x2 setup with a 1x2 loft set about two thirds of the way up the grids on the lower floor so that the ramp is not so steep. The boys love it :D

I'd love to see this. I've got a 5x3 with a 1x3 loft, but it's just not very exciting. Wondering if I could do the same as you with a 5x2 up and down.

I currently have a 2x5 with my three girls Bonnie,Willow and Tiree. Above I have Ava who didn't get on with the other girls in a 2x3. As I said I lift the front off the cage to clean so I can get underneath Avas cage. My connectors unclip easily but bulldog clips would also work for a removable door. I've included a pic of the cage with the front off and on and a bonus pigture of the girls being curious about what I'm upto. The storage underneath is a unit from Ikea they sadly no longer sell in this size.

That is one beautiful cage! Sadly I haven't got the space for that size. Why was it you got rid of the guinea pig bridge in the end? (BTW I've now got that song in my head thanks a bunch! LOL)

Aww sweet photos! Is it not a pain in the bum taking off the front of the cage to poo sweep? I'd worry there would be kamikaze piggys jumping to freedom in my house. We already have a pig who likes to try and walk on the top level when there's no correx there; likes to wiggle through barriers while we are cleaning; likes to walk along the ramp when we've lifted it to clean the bottom level and there was one terrifying incident where she almost jumped from the loft to the main cage during cleaning time to escape when we've blocked her up there. (Needless to say we put her in a carry case for cleaning times now.)
